 Creative Arts at Kelly Prep

The Creative Arts department is a vibrant, lively and happy part of life at Kelly Prep. All children are involved in the various lessons, actvities, productions and displays. Purpose built facilities and specialist staff ensure that each pupils creativity is combined with excellent teaching.

Music

About 75% of the children learn a musical instrument at school and have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. This could be individually or as a group in an assembly; at the Callington Music Festival and at the Christmas Review, where singing and instrumental acts are welcome with several rock bands making themselves heard!  We have a Spring Concert where all of the children from both the Pre-Prep and Prep are invited to take part and entertain their parents and other family members.

The ‘Tavistock Sings’ event also features highly in our calendar, where the choir of up to 50 children sing a variety of songs – children from the year 6 rock band have also joined us performing popular songs from musicals and well-known pop singers.

Drama

In drama children have timetabled lessons throughout the week, focusing on dramas involving bullying, friendship and real-life situations as well as following the lives of children of their age of a different place or time, linking in with their History and Geography Curriculum.  Children are given the opportunity to perform in class assemblies and at the Christmas Review. There are also opportunities for Speech and Drama lessons which work towards the LAMDA exams.

The main drama event of the year takes place in the Summer Term, where the Year 6 pupils take the acting parts with Years 3, 4 and 5 interjecting with songs and dances. This is held in the senior school hall.  Recent productions have included Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Oliver, Twelfth Night, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Art & DT

Our Art and DT studio is a modern and inspiring space for creative work. With specialist staff and a well resourced facility children achieve highly. Renowned artists often deliver workshops to pupils and inspiration is often developed outside the studio. A visit to the school gives an opportunity to view the pupils work which is proudly displayed throughout the school.
