Contacting Your Children
The House Parents are happy to take messages for pupils when required or, if possible, get your child to the phone for you to speak to them, although this is sometimes easier said than done.
For overseas parents it is a good idea to arrange set times to call - this speeds up the process as your child can be ready waiting for the call.
Please do not call your children during prep time (6.30 pm - 7.30 pm) of after their bedtime (8.45 pm for Prep School, 9.00 pm for 1st year and 9.15 pm for 2nd year).
Mobile phones are used by most boarders to contact their parents. These remain the responsibility of the pupils, but they will be collected in overnight. Below is a list of guidelines for their use and safety.
Whereas the School is happy for pupils to have their mobile phones in their possession, the following rules must be adhered to:
- The pupils themselves are responsible for the safekeeping of their mobile phone. The Housemaster is always willing to keep valuable items for pupils.
- Parents should make sure that phones are insured against accidental loss, damage or theft.
- The phone must be clearly named.
- It is a good idea to use the "call barring" system that many companies operate - this means that pupils can only call certain specified numbers.
- Pupils should always use the security PIN numbers for their phone.
- Pupils are expected to let the House Parents know the details of their phone by filling in a registration card.
- Phones may only be used within the designated House areas.
- Phones are to be handed in to the duty member of staff at lights out.
Any breach of the above will result in confiscation of phones.
Cycling
Pupils wishing to cycle to school need to have parental permission to do so.
Please either email/call or write a note.
Bikes can be locked to the railings outside Conway or in the bike shed at the bottom of the hill. Bikes should be securely locked when not in use.
Please ensure that your son/daughter is dressed appropriately, with safety in mind.
Evenings at Conway
The evenings are a time for boarders to relax and socialise after what is quite a busy day. From 5.00 pm they can change out of their school uniform and wear their own clothes. There is plenty to do in the house, with table football, air hockey, pool, table tennis. In dry weather, of course, whilst it is still light, they can play outside. There are also TVs with DVD players, Freeview and Sky for a more sedate end to the day. We ask parents to check the age rating on the DVDs they bring to make sure they are appropriate for the age of the children.
The Prep School boarders have their own lounge, should they wish to use it. This will also have a TV and DVD player.
Dinner is at 5.45 pm. As this is quite early we hope to provide refreshments during the evening, in the form of squash, hot chocolate, cookies and cakes. Fresh fruit will be available, to which the pupils may help themselves. The pupils can also make toast for themselves. All we ask is that they tidy up after themselves and, should something get broken, that they let us know straight away. With these refreshments available it is not necessary for boarders to bring 'tuck' with them to school, so please do not bring it.
Two members of the tutor team will be on duty every evening, usually helped out by prefects from the Lower Sixth Form and school monitors, who are assigned to the House.
There is Prep, which lasts for 1 hour, starting at 6.30 pm. Prep is a formal time supervised by the resident tutor and monitors and is carried out in the Conway Classrooms.
Exeat Weekends
Exeats are weekends where the school closes on Friday evening for the weekend. It is expected that all full boarders will be off-site with parents, guardians or friends during Exeats. Pupils may visit friends for these, and other weekends, but we must have the permission of both sets of parents before we will let them go. Please make sure that the arrangements are discussed with the House Parents in advance, with details in writing (email is fine).
Weekly boarders are expected to go home on Friday evening, but are welcome to stay if the parent requests this. Extra boarding will be charged to the end of term bill at the flexi-boarding rate of £30.00 per night.
Flexi-Boarding
Day pupils are welcome to stay overnight, or longer, if there is space. Parents are asked to contact the House Parents to arrange this. The current charge is £30.00 per night (2010-11). Pupils will need to bring their overnight things with them, as well as a duvet or sleeping bag. The House can supply sheets, pillows and pillow cases.
House Staff 2011 - 2012
Your House Parents are Sam and Ben Donnelly; we live at Conway House with our two children, Georgia, and Harry, both of whom go to the Kelly. We bring with us our small menagerie of Ruby our black labrador and three cats.
Ben has been teaching Science and Biology at Kelly for 9 years and has been the Director of Outdoor Education until the end of last year, but still runs the Duke of Edinburgh Award and is involved in training for the Ten Tors and Kelly Expedition. Sam is a secondary school Biology teacher.
Our Prep Boarding Housemother is Mrs Karen Tawn.
Your Day Housemistress is Mrs Trudie Bratt. Mrs Bratt has been teaching for 13 years and has been a Literacy Co-ordinator and Head of English in previous schools. She currently teaches English and is involved with Duke of Edinburgh, Ten Tors and Kelly Expedition. In addition to this, she is involved with an Expeditionary Society and has led expeditions to China, Ecuador and India. Kaiser, her dog, will be in the house on a daily basis.
Our Day Matron is Mrs Lorraine Croot and she is in Conway from 7.30am - 2.00pm. Her role is to help supervise the day-to-day running of Conway and to oversee housekeeping and medical arrangements. Should pupils require medial treatment during the day, they will go to reception where the School Nurse will be contacted and appropriate treatment given.
We are also lucky to have resident house tutor, Mr Ian Leaman, who will be playing a role in the running of the house and you will have plenty of time to get to know all of them.
Our main themes for general conduct and behaviour are simple: be well-mannered, disciplined and respectful of yourself, each other, the fabric of the building and, of course, for the authority of the staff.
We are very much looking to continue to improve all aspects of the House and we welcome comments and suggestions from parents and pupils as to how we may carry on this work. We are hoping that Friday afternoons from 4.30 pm will be a time for parents and the House Parents to meet in a very informal way in Conway for 'tea and cakes'. It is intended that this will be an opportunity for parents to get to know each other and the house tutors and, of course, for parents to catch up on the progress of their children.
We very much hope that your time with us will be very happy and don't forget we are here to help and guide you, so please make use of us.
Laundry and Clothing
Please ensure that clothing is clearly labelled - this does not just mean school kit, but also casual clothing. Clothes left lying around can therefore be returned much more easily.
Clean sheets and pillow cdases are issued once a week. Pupils will need to supply their own duvets, towels and shoe cleaning kit. If they wish, they may bring their own duvet which, again, should be labelled.
Registration and Signing In/Out for Day Pupils
Pupils should be dropped off and picked up from the Parade Ground. See also Traffic on Kelly College Site.
It is vital that we know where pupils are and who is still on site. Registration is an important time for information to be passed on to pupils and starts promptly at 8.20 am, so please ensure that your child is present.
If your child is ill and not attending school, please contact Mrs Bratt on 01822 813142 before 8.20am (this phone has an answer phone service so a message can be left), or phone Reception (01822 813100) after 8.30 am.
A further registration happens during the end of lunch break at 1.25pm.
Day pupils must sign out at the end of the day on the signing out sheet. This is an important responsibility for the pupils and great confusion can be caused if a pupil leaves the house without letting us know. Students may be picked up from 5.15 pm.

Traffic on Kelly College Site
There is a one-way system up Conway Hill through to Marwood House. However, this area will be closed off during break and lunch-times to ensure the safety of children walking from Conway House to the main school.
Ideally, pupils should be dropped off and collected from the Parade Ground.
Please note that no-one should be entering the College grounds from the top gate by Marwood House. When parents do use the area around Marwood House as a turning place it creates significant risk for pupils walking in this area. You should use the one-way system to ensure a safe environment for your children to walk to their houses.
Tutor Time
This happens once a week on a Monday afternoon. The tutors will be monitoring pupils' academic progress and will talk through their Order Cards. These are internal reports that occur roughly every three weeks during the year.
There may be times when the tutor will wish to contact you to update you on your child's progress. The preferred method for this is email, as we have found that trying to contact parents by phone is difficult as, of course, many of you work the same hours as we do. We urge you, therefore, to supply us with your current email address and update us of any change to this as soon as possible.
Weekends
Quite a lot of the full boarders' time will be filled during the weekends. However, it is not our intention to entertain the children all the time in the style of a holiday camp. It is important that children have some unstructured time when they have the opportunity to learn to entertain themselves. This will, of course, have great benefits for you as parents during those long school holidays.
We would suggest that pupils come prepared. Bring in things to amuse yourselves - this could include games, computer games, models, bikes, skateboards or mountain boards. With these last items we do ask that parents ensure that your child has the appropriate safety gear and we will try to ensure they wear it. We will offer safekeeping for what they bring in, but the pupil must take responsiblity for it when in use.
We would also like parents to appreciate that not all this time will be supervised, in the same way that you do not watc over your children every second of the day. The grounds at Kelly are a great environment for the children and we would like them to be out there having fun, rather than hanging around the House, a view, I am sure you as parents, will support.
All we ask is that they let us know where they are going and what they are likely to be doing. The campus is generally quite safe, in that there is always someone close by to ask for help should a problem arise and, of course, there will always be someone on duty in the House.
On Saturday mornings a compulsory supervised prep session will be held between 9.00-10.00am. This leaves the rest of the weekend free to relax and enjoy.
Saturday afternoon is a time when your children may wish to go into Tavistock. This is fine, but they must sign out with one of the House Parents. They will, of course, not be allowed into town on their own, but they should be in groups of no less than three, one of whom should carry a mobile phone with which they can contact the House if they have a problem.
A member of the school staff runs Sunday activities every week. These have included in the past: bowling, cinema trips, Quasar, ice skating and tobogganing. These trips are included in the cost of full boarding fees. However there are occasions when we do activities that may require a little extra. You will be informed about these activities.
It is also quite likely that on occasions we may invite boarders to join in with our family, should be be doing something good. This may well be simply walking the dog, or possibly going to one of the local theme parks or the cinema. We would add the cost of these trips to your bill but, if the cost were greater tan £10, we would try to gain your permission first.
