Intensive Outdoor Skills Course

The Adventure Centre is fast becoming the National Training Centre for Outdoor Instructor Training.

We train the Outdoor Instructors of the future. Our students come from all different backgrounds aged 18 - 50.

15 years experience - over 400 Instructors trained and placed in the Industry.

Our Aim

To provide the Industry with outdoor instructors who not only have the necessary hard skills and National Governing Body Awards but who also have the necessary knowledge to support this.

Why train with us:

The course is run at the Adventure Centre enabling you to get a real feel for Centre life plus the opportunity to work alongside external clients.

We offer great facilities with activity venues literally on our doorstep:

On site Swimming Pool, enabling students to practise kayak rolling and strokes.

River Tavy runs two minutes from the Centre. This river offers white water from grade 1 –3 experiences. Students can literally carry their boats and paddle certain sections.

On site High Ropes Course , Trapeze and Jacobs Ladder.

Tree Abseil Platform enabling students to practise their rope work and abseiling techniques

The information below includes a description of some of the activities provided at The Adventure Centre. The team is committed to providing courses of a high standard with a clear focus on developing people and teams to their maximum potential.

The Centre is AALA Licensed and a BCU Approved Centre. We employ full time residential trainers who provide expert instruction in all aspects of the disciplines covered. There is an option for participants to be accommodated on the beautiful Kelly College site. Check out www.kellycollege.com

The Centre was recently listed in the top ten Centres in the Country.

West Devon provides plenty of opportunities to pursue a wide range of outdoor pursuits both throughout the course and in your free time. Surfing and kiting on the North Devon coast, cragging at The Dewerstone and sailing at Plymouth are just some of the activities on the doorstep

The course works students towards National Governing Body Qualifications in Climbing, Walking, Kayaking and Open Canoeing. The majority of the candidates achieve their:

BMC Single Pitch Award Training in Climbing.

MLTE Summer Mountain Leader Training

BCU 1 + 2 Star Generic in Kayaking/Canoeing.

Canoe Safety Test.

UKCC BCU Level 1 Coach

BCU 3 Star in White Water Kayaking or Open Canoeing

UKCC BCU Trainee Level 2 Coach

Additional training is given in:

  • Orienteering
  • Archery
  • Problem Solving etc

With theory sessions one evening a week including health and safety, risk assessments, licensing laws, child protection policies, development training, theories and models, environmental awareness, crisis management, presentation skills etc.

We provide you with all the necessary tools to gain employment in the Industry.

Facilitation, Teambuilding and Leadership

As one of the leading development centres in the South West, The Adventure Centre has a great deal of experience in providing excellent teambuilding and leadership courses to many different clients including Nintendo UK, Royal Mail and Abbey National plc.

We will introduce methods and techniques used to develop individuals and teams are studied. These include Kolb’s Learning Cycle, Adair’s Action Centred Leadership and Belbin’s Roles.

A unique part of the Outdoor Skills Course is the ability to practise newly acquired coaching skills on Client groups. This invaluable experience allows candidates to develop the ‘soft-skills’ that will allow them to become excellent instructors.

Climbing

Candidates will be taught rope work and group skills including belaying techniques, anchoring, abseiling, route planning and climbing etiquette.

Candidates will be encouraged to perfect their skills in their own time.

Locations. The Adventure Centre is situated on the edge of Dartmoor, offering many great climbing venues. Closest to the Centre is The Dewerstone, (The ‘Devils Rock’) which boasts some classic 3* routes. During the mild winters experienced in the South West, crags, including Chudleigh, offer fantastic climbing for groups, offering ample opportunity to work towards SPA qualifications.

The Adventure Centre is also close to the coast of North Cornwall and the challenges of Bosigran, Sennon Cove and Chair Ladder.

Indoor climbing walls are also used for training

Kayaking / Canoeing

The Adventure Centre adopts a flexible approach to goal setting in all activities. Those candidates with no previous experience can work towards Star awards in nearby flat water and on-site swimming pool. For the more experienced paddler, it is possible to be working towards Level 3 coach training by the end of the course.

The Centre is situated by ‘The ‘Loop’ providing white water opportunities up to Grade 4 on the River Dart. Also available is Grade 3 white water on the River Tavy, right next to the Centre, and Grade 2 white water on the Rivers Tamar, Lynher and Fowey.

Hill Walking

With 369 square miles of Moorland wilderness, Dartmoor offers candidates a fantastic area to practice navigational skills, environmental awareness and leadership issues.

In addition to Dartmoor, other venues in Wales will be used as the course progresses

The Extras

All Outdoor Skills Course trainers are full time employees of The Adventure Centre, Kelly College, assuring you quality tuition. Each one will have a wealth of experience of working in the outdoors and have a thorough understanding of the day-to-day running of a centre. Risk assessments, accident and incident forms, stores paperwork, licensing and many other issues that are involved in running and working in a busy outdoor centre will be covered by the Outdoor Skills Course.

The team of trainers are enthusiasts and you will discover that they are very keen to show you some of the best that Devon and Cornwall has to offer the outdoor practitioner.

The cost of the Spring 2009 Course = £4750.00, non residential. 

The cost of the Winter 2009 Course = £4750.00, non residential.

Basic accommodation can be provided here at the Centre at an additional charge of £90.00 per week including full catering
