Foundation Instructor Course

The Foundation Instructor Course is for students under 18 years old and is an introductory course to the Industry.

It is for those young students after leaving Secondary School who are looking for a practical course to give them a stepping stone into the Industry.

Our Aim

Over the duration of the course it lays down the foundation skills and underpinning knowledge to start a career in the Outdoor Industry.

The only foundation instructor course devised and executed for students under 18 years old. Run at the leading development-training centre in the southwest.

Why spend a year or two at a College working towards a paperwork qualification when the Industry requires hard skills qualifications.

Total of 22 weeks

Course commences on Monday 7th September 2009 running through to Friday 11th December 2009. A total of thirteen weeks plus one week half term.

Re starts on Monday 11th January 2010 through to Friday 19th March 2010. A total of nine weeks plus a one week half term.

The course is run at the Adventure Centre enabling you to get a real feel for Centre life plus the opportunity to work alongside external clients.

We offer great facilities with activity venues literally on our doorstep:

On site Swimming Pool, enabling students to practise kayak rolling and strokes.

River Tavy runs two minutes from the Centre. This river offers white water from grade 1 –3 experiences. Students can literally carry their boats and paddle certain sections.

On site High Ropes Course, Trapeze and Jacobs Ladder.

Tree Abseil Platform enabling students to practise their rope work and abseiling techniques.

The Centre is AALA Licensed and a BCU Approved Centre.

The Centre was recently listed in the top ten Centres in the Country.

West Devon provides plenty of opportunities to pursue a wide range of outdoor pursuits both throughout the course and in your free time. Surfing and kiting on the North Devon coast, cragging at The Dewerstone and sailing at Plymouth are just some of the activities on the doorstep.

The course works students towards National Governing Body Qualifications in Climbing, Walking, Kayaking and Open Canoeing.

Canoe Safety Test.

The new British Canoe Union 3 Star White Water Kayak

The new British Canoe Union 3 Star Open Canoe

The new UKCC BCU Level 1 Coach

The new UKCC BCU Level 2 Coach Training

Walking/Navigation

Basic Expedition Leadership Award

National Navigation Award Bronze, Silver, Gold

Climbing/Abseiling

Pre training towards the Single Pitch Award. Candidates will need to attend a training course once they are 18.

The National Indoor Climbing Achievement Award

Powerboating

Royal Yacht Association Powerboat Level 2 Certificate

Archery

Grand National Award Society Community Sports Leader

 Additional training is given in:

·     High Ropes Courses

·     Trapeze

·     Jacobs Ladder

·     Orienteering

·     Problem Solving etc

With theory sessions within the week including health and safety, risk assessments, session planning, preparation of resources, outdoor equipment and maintenance, working within a team, the role of an instructor, licensing laws, presentation skills etc

The Extras

All Outdoor Skills Course trainers are full time employees of The Adventure Centre, Kelly College, assuring you quality tuition. Each one will have a wealth of experience of working in the outdoors and have a thorough understanding of the day-to-day running of a centre. Risk assessments, accident and incident forms, stores paperwork, licensing and many other issues that are involved in running and working in a busy outdoor centre will be covered by the Outdoor Skills Course.

The team of trainers are enthusiasts and you will discover that they are very keen to show you some of the best that Devon and Cornwall has to offer the outdoor practitioner.

The cost of the Foundation Instructor Course = £5500.00, non residential.

Basic accommodation can be provided within one of the off site boarding houses just a five minute walk from the Centre at an additional charge of £90.00 per week including full catering

The course is not eligible for any grants or funding.
