Old Kelleian. Following retirement from Lloyds Bank in 1997, where he enjoyed a number of managerial positions, both in branches and in Head Office, London, he worked part-time for the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) for ten years.
He is an honorary life member of the CLA and takes a keen interest in rural affairs. He keeps about twenty hives of bees and is a member of the Devon Beekeepers’ Association, the British Beekeepers’ Association and an honorary member of the Central Association of Beekeepers. He enjoys watching most sports, especially rugby, listens to a wide variety of music, maintains a large garden and spends too much time painting and decorating!
He has been a Governor since November 1998 and was elected Chairman in March 2002. He is also Chairman of Kelly Enterprises Ltd, acting Chairman of the Financial and General Purposes Committee and a member of the Strategy and Development Committee.

Former Principal and Chief Executive of the College of St Mark & St John, Plymouth [1995-2003]
Previous positions in education have included Her Majesty’s Inspector of Schools [1985-1991], and Chairman, Exeter Diocesan Board of Education [2003-2009].
Lay Canon of Exeter Cathedral [since 2008]
Current voluntary work concerned with education and the Church of England, including a lead role in setting up a Church of England Academy in Plymouth.
Interests include music, especially opera, and sport, especially golf [as a player] and rugby [as a spectator].
Governor of Kelly College since 2003; Vice-Chairman since 2007; member of the Finance & General Purposes Committee and Education Committee.

Rear Admiral Chris Snow CBE
Naval Governor.
Chris Snow joined the Royal Navy in 1976; has a degree in Archaeology from Durham University; and has served in a wide variety of Fleet units as a surface warfare officer and submariner. He has held 6 command appointments. In addition he has held policy and resource appointments in the Ministry of Defence and the Fleet Headquarters and is currently Flag Officer Sea Training.
Chris is an alumnus of the Windsor Leadership Trust (Strategic leaders’ Consultation). His outside interests include sailing, reading military history, and walking the coastal footpaths. He lives near Tavistock and educated both his children through Kelly College (one has graduated in Medicine from Imperial College; the other has a Masters degree from Plymouth University). His wife teaches swimming at the school.
Appointed Naval Governor in March 2009.
Captain M.C. Clapp CB Royal Navy
Joined the Royal Navy in 1950 and served in the Fleet Air Arm as an Observer. Commanded the first operational Buccaneer Mk2 Squadron as well as three ships and the Falklands Amphibious Task Group in 1982.
On retirement became a stock-broker and was elected Naval Governor of Kelly College in 1985. Has served as Chair of Finance and General Purposes Committee and as Vice-Chairman.
Life-long interest in sailing and most country sports. Has been closely involved with a number of charities and trusts.
Mrs E Loosmore
For four terms taught at Kelly College when it was a boys only College. Retired from teaching in 1996.
A career in teaching French, mainly in Grammar Schools, both mixed and single sex. 1972-4 taught in an International School, Teheran.
Sometime LEA governor of Milton Abbot Primary School and Parish Council representative on the Governing Body of Lady Modiford’s Primary School, Walkhampton. Governor of Kelly College since 1996. Have served on all committees at some time.
Lifelong interest in sport and the development of young people.
Active member of Tavistock Golf Club and Tennis Club. Other interests include France, travel, sailing, reading, bridge and grandchildren.
Dr Howard J Ball
Born and educated in Mutare, Zimbabwe he was awarded the Anglo American Open Scholarship to read medicine at the University of Cape Town. Represented the university at marathon running, squash and volley ball.
Moved to the UK in 1987 before gaining a place on the General Practice vocational training scheme in Cornwall. Medical experience included a part time hospital post in Child Psychiatry. He is now a full time GP in Cornwall involved in both undergraduate teaching through Peninsular Medical School and GP registrar training.
Appointed a Governor in 1998 by virtue of being ‘Founder’s Kin’, (a descendant of Admiral Kelly’s grandfather), he has three children currently boarding at Kelly College. A director of Kelly Enterprises since 2008, interests include kayaking, cycling and summer barbeques!
Mr M W Kelham
Taught French etc at the Junior Schools of Liverpool College, Felsted, and Cheltenham College, 1958-1967. Headmaster of Forest Junior School, Leytonstone (1967-1972) and St. Hugh’s Prep School, Woodhall Spa, Lincs, (1972-1994) Retired in 1994 to live in Cornwall.
Currently SW area representative for JET (Joint Educational Trust) a ‘prep school’ charity; serves on the committee which runs the Save the Children junior tennis tournament. Organises the annual IAPS (prep schools) tennis tournament. Skipper and booking manager for the Jubilee – a narrow boat which runs public trips on the Kennet and Avon canal.
Hobbies include boating, model and real railways, walking, tennis.
Appointed a governor 1999. Member of the Kelly College Preparatory School Committee.
The Baroness Fookes of Plymouth DBE, DL
Former teacher in independent schools and for three years (1967 – 1970) Chairman of a Local Authority. MP for two different constituencies, mainly Plymouth Drake (1970 to 1997). Chaired under the old system a Select Committee covering Education and the Home Office.
Currently an active member of the House of Lords and a postgraduate member of the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme.
A Deputy Lieutenant, Patron or President of a number of charities including President of the War Widows’ Association, President of the Sussex Branch SSAFA Forces Help, President of the Plymouth & District Branch of the RSPCA, a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners.
Appointed a Governor in 2001. Private interests include gardening, yoga, swimming and scuba diving.
Mr D M Vine
Ran his own specialised engineering based company making specialised vehicles for the Ministry of Defence, police forces and large international companies before selling the business some twenty years ago.
Currently involved in commercial property investments, building developments and also owns a motor business in Plymouth.
Other interests include sailing, skiing, golf and good food.
A Governor since 2002, he sits on the Finance & General Purposes, Strategy and Development and the Kelly Enterprises sub-committees.
Mr S J Carder
Former Headmaster of two prep schools: Eagle House in Berkshire (1988-2006) and Beachborough in Buckinghamshire (1979-88).
Chairman of the Independent Association of Prep Schools 2003-04. Inspector for the Independent Schools Inspectorate since 1992.
Now runs his own Educational Consultancy providing training for schools in areas such as preparation for inspection; carrying out appraisals of Heads and other senior staff; and helping schools to appoint Heads and Bursars.
President of Plymouth Rotary Club 2009-10. Member of the Royal Western Yacht Club. Other interests include most sports, the theatre, France, walking on Dartmoor.
Governor of Kelly College since 2007. Chairman of the Education Committee; Chairman of the Kelly College Prep School Committee.
District Judge C J Tromans
Before becoming a Governor of Kelly in 2007, he served as a Governor of another independent school in the South West for almost 30 years, including 11 years as Vice-Chairman. Recently completed a term of office as a member of the Council of what is now University College Plymouth St Mark & St John (Marjon).
Since 1992 he has been a District Judge based in Plymouth, dealing with civil and family cases. He has been a visiting lecturer in law at the University of Plymouth. He is a Training Judge for the Judicial Studies Board and has been a regular contributor to legal periodicals.
His interests, when not involved with his work and with Kelly, include Tavistock Parish Church, country life, travel and military history.
Mr K Hollinshead
Qualified as a Solicitor in 1970 but retiring in 2009 following the sale of his private practice in Tavistock
Past Trustee of The Lord’s Taverners for whom he still sits on various committees. Chairman of Trustees of The Talking Newspaper for the Blind (West Devon). Interested in most sports with particular love of soccer, having played for Aston Villa as an amateur. Keen interest in music and wine

Mr D P Jones
After teaching at Downside and Sherborne, Headmaster at Christ College, Brecon from 1996-2007.
Former Independent schools Inspector and chairman of Welsh Independent Schools’ Council.
Former member of Admiralty Interview Board.
A governor at three independent schools; a governor at Kelly College since 2007 and a member of the Education Committee.
Interests include most sports; especially fly fishing for sea-trout and salmon, training gundogs and writing.
Mrs A Childs
Having studied Chinese as an undergraduate, went on to complete an MSc in cross-cultural youth development and is currently undertaking research into second language acquisition within the department of education at Oxford University.
She lived and worked in China for several years and now specialises in educational projects that bring an international dimension to schools in China and the UK. She is managing director of a UK university foundation programme run within one of Beijing’s top high schools and in London runs an OCR asset languages exam centre. She is an accredited teacher on the asset languages programme.
As a previous head-girl of Kelly College (1982/3), she is very pleased to be returning to the school as a Governor in 2009. She is also a Governor of an independent day school in West London.
