Founder's Day at Kelly College July 2nd 2011Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
One of Kelly College's most significant days of the year began with a Commemoration Service at Tavistock’s Parish Church, remembering College founder Admiral Kelly. The church was full with pupils, parents and staff celebrating the occasion and the service was led by The Reverend Michael Meachin BTh RN.

Following that, students, staff, parents and friends made their way back to the school for the annual Prize Giving, where they were treated to a thought provoking and entertaining speech from global business woman, ex Kelly pupil and Founder’s descendent, Tessa Cook.

Tessa is the Global Managing Director of E-commerce at Dyson. She spoke of her life experiences and challenges and how she felt her Kelly education enhanced her future experiences and opportunities.

By 7.00pm the celebrations were in full swing for an evening attended by some 380 guests at the Friends of Kelly Summer Masked Ball. This fantastic event was blessed by glorious weather and guests enjoyed a champagne reception on the Parade Ground before sitting down to a sumptuous buffet.
The evening continued with a memorable firework display, dancing to live band Gav & the Grim Notes and a great disco by Shot in the Dark, as well as fairground rides of Dodgems and a Carousel.

As part of their GCSE Biology course Fourth Form Biologists were asked to put together a campaign to raise awareness within the school community of intensive farming techniques.

On Friday 24th June they protested about the inhumane practice of intensively farming chickens. They created a Facebook page, collected over 140 names on a petition and made cakes with free range eggs to raise money and awareness.

The students also contacted Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall to invite him to the event but unfortunately, he was unable to attend!

All the money raised is being sent to “compassion in world farming” http://www.ciwf.org.uk/

Amazon Patrol Craft Race - this was great fun!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
With a brand new design of boat, in its 1st year of development, the Amazon Patrol Craft Race proved to be an exciting and unmissable event. All the excited 1st years competing rushed down to the swimming pool to race their APC boats, which they have spent many months building and tuning to perfection in their Design & Technology class.

The boats sped off at the start, but a few were left disappointed as their craft struggled to the middle of the pool and then proceeded to spin around in circles, but most of the boats did eventually reach the other side! - the winners were Ted Hatcher and Kacper Brudnik - pictured.

Inter-house sailing competition, the action & results!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Wigfull Challenge Cup
Wednesday 15th June 2011

Once again the inter-house sailing competition was held at Roadford reservoir this year. Each house nominated 6 helms to race single-handed around a triangular course.

Three separate races were held, each with two competitors from each of the houses, so with twelve boats on the water there were plenty of incidents at the marks!

Matt Courtis of Courtenay showed the way with an emphatic win in the first race, but could not prevent Russell house taking an early lead in the competition with Chris Barbour and Harry Coulton finishing second and third.

In the second race Oli Hancox recovered from a dreadful start to win for Russell, closely followed by Kyle Telford of School house and Teddy Searight from Courtenay.

In the third race Beth Barnes led from start to finish to record a second victory for Russell house and tremendous sailing from Ben Hancox and Alex Byrne saw Conway secure second and third to leap-frog School house in the overall results table.

Special mention should also be made of Jess Bailey who competed for Marwood in all three races and only capsized once!

Overall Result
1st place 17 points Russell House.
2nd place 25 points Courtenay House.
3rd place 42 points Conway House.
4th place 43 points School House.
5th place 50 points Newton House.
6th place 57 points Marwood House.

Go4SET CAD Day - Kelly College, the 'Pupils Choice'
Thursday 16th June

Go4SET is an initiative run by the EDT Trust, aimed at encouraging year 3 students into the exciting world of engineering as a possible future career choice.

Kelly is already involved with a similar scheme for lower 6th students, so the Go4SET was a welcome addition for our students. The team of six, (Ciara Glossop, Kate Blackwell, Selina Kisby, Rosannah Morel, Philip Sloman and Toby Broadhead) had ten weeks to complete a design for an 'eco-classroom'' and present their findings with an exhibition, presentation and a model of their proposed design to a
team of assessors.

The Plymouth University Venue saw the culmination of all their efforts and an impressive stand was decked with informative boards explaining energy sources and diagrams of the classroom as well as details of the company visit to Ambrosia at Lifton.

Judging was fierce and the team faced nearly 20 minutes of questioning about the design and its possibilities in reality. The team rose bravely to the gruelling crossfire of enquiries and shone through, gaining many rewarding comments as to professionalism and its comprehensiveness.

The day culminated with all 12 participating schools receiving certificates for their endeavours and participation in this great scheme.

The Kelly team was also awarded a prize for being judged the 'Pupils Choice', an award voted for by the other schools for the best display stand and general information and friendliness and expertise of their project on the day.
A great end to an intensive ten weeks.

Structural Engineering Challenge at Mount House School

An excited team of six first years (Beatrice Wilson, Kacper Brudnik, Riley Robinson, Katy Davidson, Katherine Hawley and Cameron Mckie) left Kelly for a day of structural engineering challenges.

Not knowing what the day had in store, the team first had an informative talk about structures from around the world as an appetiser for the challenge. The hall fell silent as our hosts explained they were to design a tower, over 2.5metres high that could support a hanging weight of 1kg at from its zenith and another of 1kg at a 1m height!

To add further complications the students were only allowed to use rolled up A3 paper tubes or A4 rolled paper tubes. Design ideas started to be talked about on the way back from the hall to the making area and after a frenzied morning of tube construction, most towers were barely off the floor..

After a superb lunch the towers began to rise swiftly and as the deadline drew near, most teams had towering paper structures. Alas the Kelly tower, though impressive had a weakness towards its top and suffered a slight failure when the weight was hung from its lofty peak.

The day was hugely successful and enormous fun for all involved, much was learnt about triangular strength and friendships forged. Thank you to the Engineering students from Exeter University for their advice throughout the challenge and to everyone at Mount House who were most welcoming.

Victoria gets 2nd place at the S/W Area Tetrathlon!Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Victoria Callow of Kelly College spent her time wisely during the half term, competing at the South West Area Tetrathlon at Bicton College.

Victoria, a member of the Kelly College Swim Squad, was representing Lamerton Pony Club in the Tetrathlon which is a two day event. On the first day, Victoria scored 840 points on the turning target shoot which she followed up with a personal best swim which left her in 5th place overnight.
Victoria’s swim was the best overall swim.

Day 2 started with a cross country ride consisting of 22 jumps and a slip rail and gate, which had to be negotiated in a certain time so as not to add penalties. Victoria and her horse Zennor achieved a clear on the cross country course and after a 45 minute break, Victoria completed a 1500m run in a good time, which saw her move up into 2nd place overall.

Victoria said ‘I am very proud of myself and my horse as it is only the second time we have competed at cross country and our first ever tetrathlon’.

Kelly College Sailing Team challenge Plymouth CollegeUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
A good day was had by all on the Sound, with some testing conditions for the crews. The course was sailed in Laser 3000's, with 3 dinghies in each team.

Kelly started well, taking the top three places in the first race. The second race with a slightly altered course was a win to Kelly but with the Plymouth boats showing improvement. The third race showed a further improvement by Plymouth although this was helped by one Kelly boat unfortunately missing one of the marks whilst leading the pack by some way!

The next two races were memorable by the Kelly mishaps with one boat deciding to go for a wander whilst everybody else started the race.

A memorable last race was hotly contested and as the boats reached the windward mark a Kelly boat in the pack capsized, spectacularly missing the Plymouth boats but managing to take out one of the other Kelly boats.
It must be remarked that one of the Plymouth boats which had struggled throughout the first four races managed to come through well to take first place in the final race, a credit to them.

All in all, a great result for Kelly - very well done to all involved: Chris Barbour, George Harold, Harry Coulton, Will Jones, Christian Brown, Teddy Searight.
Ten Tors Challenge Success at 35, 45 and 55 milesUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
This year's teams were blessed with clear skies and sunshine for the start of the 51st Ten Tors Challenge!

Following months of training, Kelly pupils were amongst around 2,400 participants who trekked 35, 45 or 55 miles across open moorland.

All teams have to remain completely self-sufficient throughout the challenge, carrying all their food, water, bedding and tents and relying entirely on their well practised navigational skills.

Training for the challenge involves developing essential skills, together with commitment, determination and excellent teamwork.

The teams were all very grateful to Mr Lazenbury, Mr Bottrell, and all of the pupils, parents, teachers and friends who showed their support both at the beginning and end of their challenge.

Together with the great sense of achievement for completing the challenge itself, the Kelly teams also raised over £1,600 for the RNLI.

Old Kelleian DayUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Many Old Kelleians and their families joined us on Saturday May 7th for an entertaining and nostalgic visit to Kelly. Guests of Honour Christopher Hirst (former Headmaster) and Sara Hirst attracted many of their former pupils to share the day and Old Kelleian Dinner with them.

The weather, though threatening, was fairly kind, allowing an entertaining cricket match to be played between Kelly College 1st XI and the Old Kelleian Team (that only formed on the day). On this occasion Kelly College team triumphed with a convincing win.

During the day visitors enjoyed tours around the boarding houses and school – escorted by the Head of School and School Monitors, a barbecue and tea on the College lawns, swimming, archery and a climbing wall challenge. The little ones also enjoyed a bouncy castle and a magician.

There was a fine and moving service in Kelly College Chapel, with guest chaplain Reverend Robert Prance and the College Choir singing – joined by some of the Old Kelleians. Amongst others remembered was Denis Ball MBE, MA Headmaster of Kelly College from 1972 – 1985 who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The day was rounded off with a thoroughly enjoyable celebratory dinner, catered for by Kelly College catering staff.

Kelly College students win prestigious engineering awardUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Kelly College students attended Plymouth University on the 4th May to collect their trophy and certificates from the Engineering Education Scheme, a particularly good result as this was the first year the award has been presented and competition was very strong.
This award recognised the achievement of Kelly College students Edward Blackwell, Harry Coulton, Peter Meachin and Michael Parlby who have been working with successful Cornish pasty company Ginsters since November on a challenging engineering project.

The aim was to use the skills learned at Kelly College to investigate the design & construction of an improved “crimphead shoe”, which Ginsters use to give products their distinctive shape, resulting in reduced wastage and down-time on the busy Callington production line.

During their six-month project phase, students were encouraged to show industrial enterprise, creativity and innovation whilst gaining extensive experience of problem-solving, team-working and project management. All key life skills are developed within the context of the world of work, providing the motivation and inspiration to continue on a career path involving science, engineering and technology after leaving Kelly College.

At the awards ceremony the team had to deliver a presentation to the panel of experts drawn from South West companies. In an excellent talk, they described the obstacles they faced and how they were solved. The team then went on to face more demanding questions from the judges whilst manning their display stand.

OK Hockey matchesUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
The Old Kelleian Hockey matches took place on a lovely hot sunny day and with two matches to play it was going to be an exciting afternoon.

The 2nd XI v 2nd XI OKs was a great game with end to end action. The OKs scored the first goal and the Kelly Boys not to be put off by this came back with an excellent finish and scored the equalising goal.

The 1st XI v 1st XI OKs was a different game altogether. With a huge amount of strength in the returning OK team the Kelly boys were pushed to the maximum. The score line of 2 - 7 defeat does not reflect how well the Kelly boys played but were just outplayed on the day. The good thing was that it proved that once the skills of a Kelly hockey player have been finely tuned they carry them on with them into later in life!

Overall an excellent afternoon with a high level of hockey being played.

Perhaps most intriguing was the fact that they stored everything in hard copy which amounted to well over 200 miles worth of shelving across multiple storage places.

A fascinating day included an exhibition which highlighted the ways in which our language has evolved over its long existence and how it’s still evolving today. We were also able to see books which date back thousands of years, including the very first bible that became translated into English.

On the journey home we concluded that this trip, which expanded the realms of curricular understanding, was invaluable to our learning. It was decided that history and literature as well as language and culture are comprehensively indivisible. The trip proved the importance of our language at home as well as abroad.’
Launch of the Go4SET schemeUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Just before half term, Kelly College was lucky enough to be selected to take part in the Go4SET scheme. This is a scheme aimed at Year 9 students who will be undertaking an environmental engineering project, set over a ten week period, working closely with a local company. Over two thirds of the year group at Kelly applied to take part, making the selection of a team of six very difficult. Ciara Glossop, Philip Sloman, Kate Blackwell, Toby Broadhead, Rosannah Morel and Selina Kisby were chosen to make up the team and attended the scheme launch on Tuesday 1st March. The Kelly team met their mentor engineer, Leah, from Premier Foods (Ambrosia) in Lifton. They were also given the choice of three exciting ecologically based briefs to choose from. The rest of the afternoon was spent gaining information about the weeks ahead, prize giving and valuable time with arranging future meetings with the company and how to proceed with the project. The afternoon also involved a challenging team building event, which saw them using a marble and five sheets of A4 card, some masking tape and newspaper to create a marble run with the longest duration. Kelly ignored the other enthusiastic structures being developed around them and imaginatively decided that a simple ‘u’ shaped string of cardboard would make a suitable course for the marble  - to run firstly in one direction, and then, under momentum, continue to move backwards, - still moving but not breaking the competition rules. Suffice to say the Kelly team beat the other 14 teams, with an impressive duration of 17.4 seconds.

The team will now have to decide on one of the three project choices, meet again with their company mentor and embark on a ten week project that will be challenging and rewarding.

Watch this space for details of the chosen brief and its progression.

The team tweak problems with rigidity on their suspended track.

The Kelly team receive a prize of sweets from Paul Hartley (CREST Awards) for their winning, innovative marble run.

Congratulations to everyone in Newton House, Kelly College who completed their target swim of 68km (42 miles) - which is the distance of swimming the Strait of Dover there and back - in just 36 minutes!  The swimming continued for the allotted hour and they swam an amazing 104.3km in the Kelly swimming pool. An incredible response has been received for this venture and so far a massive £6736.15 has been raised - and there is still more to collect! Thank you to everyone who swam, helped, supported and sponsored - a huge team effort.

The cause they have chosen to support this year is the 'Cots for Tots' appeal, run by regional chairty Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal.

On the left there is a link to Jack’s Story which has been written by Mr and Mrs Collard (Design and Technology Teachers at Kelly) whose own son, Jack, has benefited from St Michael's Hospital.

The 'Cots for Tots' campaign is raising money to support the region's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at St Michael's Hospital in Bristol.  The fundraising campaign aims to raise £1 million for the Unit to provide a new suite of four intensive care cots to help save the lives of premature and critically ill new-born babies across the South West of England. The Unit currently needs more cots in order to meet the demand for the high level care that the team provides. Money raised will also provide a new home-from-home family accommodation unit.

Kelly's India Lewis helps team win the Area Dressage ChampionshipsUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Congratulations to Kelly's India Lewis who, as part of the team, won the Area Dressage Championships.

India competed for Mid Devon Riding Club on Sunday 23rd January at the Duchy College in the Area Dressage Competition, where she was part of a team of four junior riders.

At the last minute India had to switch horses as her horse, Jack, threw a shoe. Her new horse, Shaemus, had done very little over the winter so it was quite a big decision to have to make that change.

However, she was thrilled to find that they had been placed 8th individually competing, but over the moon to find that the combined scores had placed the team in 1st place. Consequently they will now be the team representing this area at the British Riding Clubs National Dressage Championships at Hartbury in April.
Dramatic Success with LAMDAUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Kelly College was celebrating a great set of results as last term’s Speech and Drama grades were received.

Speech and Drama has been taught at Kelly for the last fourteen years by Vanessa McCarty and for the last six years, public speaking has formed part of the curriculum for everyone in the Lower Sixth. Students take oral exams with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and have always enjoyed well above average results.

The most recent results saw 114 examinations being taken - 8 of which were at Grade 8. Twenty seven of the exams taken were Grade 6 and above, all of which earn UCAS points.

University of Bath  - 23rd January 2011 – RESULTS

Kelly College sent 19 qualifiers to the Pentathlon GB Schools’ National Biathlon Semi Final at the University of Bath on Sunday 23rd January 2011 and all of them achieved personal best times in the swimming.

Congratulations to Cameron Carpenter-Warren, Ellen Riis-White, Thomas Brew, Benjamin Dunlop, Georgia Jones, Brittaney O’Reilly, Christy Gold, Josh Boon, Jordan Channon, Harry Dunlop, Josh Carnell, Bret Bassett & Christian Brown, all of whom have qualified for the British Biathlon Championships. We await results from other areas to see if any of our second placed teams will get a place at the finals.

School years 12 & 13
Cameron Carpenter-Warren won the 100m swim in 57.28 in the Boys Years 12 & 13. He also placed 5th in the run in 2:52.63 scoring a total of 2708 points which gave Cameron the overall win in his year group.

Cameron was joined in that year group by Bret Bassett (13th with 2404 points) and Christian Brown (19th with 2244 points) which placed the boys as winners of the Team Year 12 & 13 Boys.

School Year 11
Ellen Riis-White, our only girl in the Year 11 Group came 2nd in the swim in 66.11 and 5th in the run in 3:23.16 which placed her 2nd overall in the individual event.

Josh Carnell was the only boy in this age group. Josh came 11th in the swim and 4th in the run, totalling 2548 points which placed him 6th.

School Year 8
Josh Boon with 2484 points, placing 4th in the swim and 5th in the run, came 2nd overall. His team mates backed him up well, with Jordan Channon placing 5th and Harry Dunlop 9th overall which meant the team had a good victory over the other teams and took 1st place with 7144 points, more than 200 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Yately Manor Prep School.

Megan Bassett found herself the only girl in this year group but did well to place 16th overall with 2188 points.

School Year 7
This time it was the girls who took top honours winning the team event with 7278 points which was nearly 400 points ahead of Crickhowell High School in second place. Georgia Jones led the way with a 3rd in the swim and 19th in the run, which placed her 7th overall. Brittaney O’Reilly (16th) and Christy Gold (19th) were Georgia’s team mates in the
win.

It was an unfortunate day for Ben Staig. Though he had placed 6th in the swim with a personal best time, he was then unable to compete in the run because of an injury.

School Year 6
Second place in the Boys Team event for this age group.  The team consisted of Benjamin Dunlop (6th), Nathan Linden (17th) and Mataeo Pearce (32nd).  Together their total points were 6702.

School Year 5
Another second place, this time for Year 5 Boys, Thomas Brew (5th), Jonathan Hawley (20th) and Jacob Staig (36th).
Phoebe Jourdan on the RNLI websiteUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Phoebe Jourdan, 2nd Form, recently gave a talk to her class at Kelly about the RNLI. She then wrote to the RNLI about her talk and they published her letter on the RNLI website

Phoebe says:

'Today I performed my talk at school. In the talk I included the following:
•What the RNLI does as a charity e.g. how much it costs to run, crew clothing and equipment, types of boat
•History and how it all began
•SOS Day, the charity's annual fundraising day I took in our own VHF radio, showed everyone how it worked and explained about the range it has compared with that of a fishing vessel or other craft. I also took in my lifejacket and demonstrated with 2 members of the class how and why it is worn. They acted out a sea rescue scenario that I wrote, which included a May Day call to Falmouth lIfeboat station.
I made a fantastic display of RNLI posters sent to me by Lucy at the South West office, and laid out all of the leaflets on a table in front of me. I gave everyone an information pack to read, including the teacher, Mrs Lanyon-Jones.

Although in the modern age many teenagers prefer texting to most things, every member of my class was really interested in the leaflets and all said they thought the talk was gripping. They all sat down and read the leaflets quietly. They also loved adding the stickers to their uniforms.'

Kelly College Raises £2,250 for Max Levene Trust FundUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
In a recent former pupils’ rugby match of the Old Kelleians against the Shebbearians (former pupils of Shebbear College, Devon) a total of £2,250 was raised for the Max Levene Trust Fund.

It was during a rugby match, a year ago, when Truro School were playing against Kelly College that Max Levene was injured in a tragic accident which left him paralysed. Headmaster, Dr Graham Hawley said, “We have all followed Max’s progress closely and we think he is a true inspiration to us all. The rugby match was a fantastic day, with former pupils coming from as far away as Tenerife, Malta and Greece to play in this match and raise money for Max.”

There were over 200 supporters on the touchline, and one of the Old Kelleians, Jon Bellamy, who organised the event, commented. “Rugby is a family, and whenever there is a need, everyone comes together.”

Competent Crew Course

Recently Molly Limb and Chantal Whitfield joined the six person crew of Headstrong, a Dehler 34, at Jupiter Point. They spent the day in Plymouth Sound learning how to sail the boat, use the working jib and anchor. The wind picked up in the afternoon until we had gusts of approximately Force 8. They spent the night on a buoy up the River Yealm, and the next morning started towards Fowey. On the passage they learned how to take a three point fix and carry out a man overboard drill. On arrival at Fowey they were taught how to come alongside a pontoon and pick up a buoy. On Sunday they completed their final trip back to Jupiter Point. Both girls enjoyed the sailing and achieving their RYA Competent Crew award.

Congratulations to Molly and Chantal and thanks to CCF, Mr Bottrell and Miss Woodroffe for encouraging them to accept the challenge.

Six students who completed their studies at Kelly College visited St James Palace to be presented with their Gold certificates in the presence of HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. Edwina Currie, who presided over the first ceremony at the royal palace, recounted stories of her D of E before giving certificates to the assembled award winners.

At Gold level the Duke of Edinburgh’s award comes in five parts - it requires the participants to help the community in the Volunteering Section; promotes participation in sports in the Physical Section; helps develop a talent in the Skills Section; the Residential Section takes individuals out of their comfort zone to develop as an individual away from friends and home; finally the expedition section sees them completing a four day expedition.

Rhys Byrne, who is currently studying Medicine at Bristol University, spent time working in a hospital in Ghana and completed the grueling 125 mile Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon. Megan Mackenzie who is studying Medicine at Imperial University worked as a volunteer in Cambodia. Jack Rouse who is studying Civil Engineering at Plymouth University worked on an Army base in Gibraltar as well as completing voluntary work for the National Trust. Georgina Killingbeck (who some may have seen riding her horse to school when the roads were snowbound!) has completed the DW canoe marathon, Ten Tors at all distances as well as her Bronze and Silver awards and is off to travel the world – first stop is Madagascar! Anastasia Steed was the College’s influential Head Girl last year and is also about to go travelling – first stop Singapore. James Macfarlane was also a veteran of all of Kelly’s major outdoor pursuits as well as an accomplished scholar and swimmer and completed his Residential section on Tall Ships.

Devon Cup Semi Final

Kelly College 12
Torquay Boys Grammar 5

The Devon Cup Semi Final was a fantastic day for Kelly College. The Kelly team was well prepared and they were focused on the task in hand. With it being the first home game of the season, a large crowd turned out on a wet a windy afternoon. The game started quickly, with Kelly having to defend their line for a 5 minute period. Kelly dealt with the pressure well, managing to turn defence into attack. Kelly spent the rest of the first half camped inside Torquay’s 22, but were unable to turn the pressure into points. With it being 0-0 at half time, Kelly knew they had to take advantage of having a dominant pack and the majority of possession. This finally showed with Mike Parlby scoring from a drive over try, which Jamie Briant converted. Torquay did manage to score a breakaway try, running the length of the field, which made for an exciting finish to the game. Kelly did however keep plugging away in the forwards, with Ben Abbot scoring in the final 5 minutes to secure the win. A fine display of rugby from the whole team and one which Captain Tom Rickard should be proud of.

National Under 19 Hockey Tournament, DEVONUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Having beaten Plymouth College earlier in the term in the Plymouth Area selection, Kelly 1sts went through to the next round which took place at Blundell’s on Wednesday 13th of October.

Kelly's first match took place against Exeter School, a strong side who Kelly had managed to beat earlier in the season so they would be even more determined to secure a win. Exeter had the majority of possession and play in the first half as Kelly was slow to adjust to the quicker paced tournament style game. Exeter had several attempts on goal yet
the half-term score was 0-0. The Kelly team played a much stronger second half, in which they made several attacks on the opposition's defence. Both teams fought down to the final whistle with some excellent hockey between Olivia Eadie and Laura Siggelow.

Kelly's second match was against Blundell’s, hosts and usual county representatives. The Blundell’s team managed to sneak in an early goal, which made Kelly lose confidence and panic as a team. Steph Hole and Chantal Whitfield proved solid in defence, whilst Barnie Goldstone and Annie Court took the brunt of the blows defending what seemed to be a
constant stream of strong attacking play. Blundell’s had most of the possession throughout the game and the final score was 3-0 to Blundell's.

Kelly's next match was against West Buckland, who again they had already beaten this season. Again the team started slow and West Buckland scored an early goal, however Kelly responded well with some great play between Laura Sivyer and Freya Semken, which lead to some attempts on goal narrowly missed by Flicky Massy-Birch. However, as
the game progressed the Kelly team began to dominate the position and consequently scored. In the last minute of the game Kelly managed to secure a short-corner, knowing this would be the final play of the game the whole team stepped up to take part in the short-corner. Laura Sivyer managed to get a touch on the ball during the hectic short-corner, leaving the final score 2-1 to Kelly.

Kelly's last match took place against an unknown South Dartmoor team. The Kelly team had high-spirits and went straight into this game with confidence, however a series of early attacks from South Dartmoor's forwards put them on the back foot, losing 2-0.  Kelly tried to come back as a team in the second half however a constant stream of defensive short-corners left them unable to play much attacking hockey.

Contribution to the tournament goes to Amy Osborne for her tireless play in midfield.

Kelly 1sts wish all the best to Blundell’s and Exeter in the next round.
Fundraising Old Kelleian Rugby matchUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
A charity rugby match was held at Kelly which saw the Old Kelleian Rugby team hosting the Shebbear College Old Boys. The charity match was raising funds for the Max Levene Trust. Max is a pupil at Truro School who was tragically paralysed whilst playing in a school rugby match in October 2009.

The Shebbear team got off to a flying start with two quick tries. Kelly came back and at 19-13 at half time, the game was finely poised.

However in the second half Shebbear raced to a 43-13 lead with ten minutes to go. Kelly pulled back and the final score was 43-25 to Shebbear.

Refreshments and an auction followed, including a signed Wasps shirt from Phil Vickery, and in total around £1800 was raised.

Thank you to Jon Bellamy (OK) for all his work in organsing this match.

Kelly pupils take to the skyUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Cadets from the College’s CCF Contingent have taken to skies gliding with the Dartmoor Gliding Society (DGS). Good luck with the weather has meant that some cadets have been able to fly on each of the Contingent’s Thursday training afternoons this term. It is hoped that up to 40 pupils will have made their maiden flights by half-term. The cadets have been flying in two-seater K-13 gliders accompanied by very experienced instructors from the DGS.

The opportunity to go Gliding has gone down well with the cadets,  Cadet Under Officer Darcey Ball described her first flight as ‘simply fantastic!’ and Cadet Warrant Officer Tom Elson-Knight thought the whole experience was ‘Awesome, definitely something to be done again, I’m really keen to go solo’.  The Cadets were also pleased to see the Headmaster head up to clouds with them; Dr Hawley enjoyed two short flights on 1st October in recompense for driving the minibus up to the DGS’s Brentor site.

As the days begin to close in after half-term the cadets’ focus will turn to ground training in aeronautic skills in preparation for the return of fair weather in the  spring. With a good grounding in those skills  it is hoped to see that some of the senior cadets will make their first solo flights in the summer of next year.

The most recent results bring the year's total (2009/2010) to 410 examinations taken - 21 of which were at Grade 8. Many of the exams taken were Grade 6 and above, all of which earn UCAS points which can be claimed from 2009.

Great Commonwealth Games Swim for Kelly College Swimmer, Cameron Brodie

Kelly College Swimmer Cameron Brodie, who just turned 18 last month, equalled his lifetime best in the 200m Butterfly at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, narrowly missing out on a place in the finals to come 10th, with a time of 2:00.16, beating fellow Scottish team-mates Andrew Mayor and Lewis Smith.  Cameron was the 4th fastest Brit and, after 150m, was in a position to match the best swimmers in the Commonwealth Games.  Speaking to his coach, Robin Brew, today, Cameron said “I’m really pleased with my swim.  The facilities here are absolutely fantastic.  The pool is amazing!  It holds 7,000 spectators.  The first time I dived in it felt really good.”

Robin Brew commented, “With age on his side and another 18 months to prepare for the Olympic Games, Cameron has shown his full potential to compete at the very highest level.”
Cameron flew out to Delhi from Doha on Thursday.  He said ‘The athletics stadium is out of this world.  I have never seen anything like it before, just enormous!  Once we arrived in the village I was just hit by the enormity of the whole thing.”  He was pleased with the athletes’ accommodation, saying, “ it was nowhere near as bad as everyone was expecting”, with well appointed apartments, including special ‘Commonwealth Games’ duvets for the athletes.  “There’s a huge food court with so many different things to try, with dishes from all continents,” said Cameron.

Cameron swims again in the 4x200m Freestyle Relay and also the 100m Butterfly today (Thu 7th Oct). You can follow his progress on the Kelly Swimming website www.kellyswimming.com or on www.facebook.com/kellyswimming
Kelly 1st XV beat Exeter SchoolUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Saturday 2nd October

Kelly College 1st XV 16
Exeter School  1st XV 13

With this match being a double header, it was not only a local derby match but also the Devon Cup quarter final too. This meant that the Kelly team had trained particularly hard throughout the week and were determined to win.

The game started well from Kelly’s point of view, as Jamie Briant kicked a long range penalty to put Kelly in the lead and it remained that way until the final whistle.

The Kelly College forwards took control from here on in, with the front row of George Harold, Tom Elson-Knight, Chris Monger, Peter Meachin and Ben Abbot really putting pressure on the Exeter pack. It was a real team effort from 1-15, with every player doing their job well. The Lindsey brothers and Tom Rickard covered a huge amount of ground in both attack and defence, whilst the back line made the right decisions at the right times to keep Exeter in their own half.

Harry MacManus scored a fantastic individual try, with a chip and chase, and to accompany this Jamie Briant kicked every kick he had, which turned out to be the difference in the two sides.

It was a phenomenal effort from the Kelly team and one which they should be proud of.

Kelly College 1st XI v  Plymouth College     -   WON     -    4  -   2

The first round of the Under 18 National Schools Hockey took place at Brickfields on 29 September and with a few schools pulling out of the tournament, the Kelly 1st XI was left to play a straight match against Plymouth College. The Kelly team took a while to warm up to the fast-paced game, and Plymouth College managed to score two goals in the first 10 minutes. However Kelly managed to secure a short-corner shortly before half time and with an excellent strike finished off by Amy Osborne, we headed for half-time 2-1 down. The Kelly team came back even more determined and instantly started with a goal. This kept the confidence high and led to another, again scored from a short-corner. This led to a much frustrated Plymouth College side leading a series of strong attacks in which the Kelly defence fought tirelessly managing to prevent several shots on goal, with some great saves from goalkeeper, Cat Bell. With the game drawing to a close, both teams were left battling it out until the very last minute. Kelly managed to pip in one last goal by Laura Siggelow which secured the victory. Special mention must go to Stephanie Hole for her strong defending through-out the match.

This victory means that Kelly now go through to represent Plymouth in the next round.

1st for Josh Boon at Taunton Deane AquathonUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

Sunday 26th September 2010 saw Josh Boon racing at the Taunton Deane Aquathon. Having turned 13 yrs old just 3 weeks ago, he had a tough job of racing in the 13-14 year old TriStar 3 Age Group. Many of his competitors were two years older than him.

Josh completed the 400 yard swim (and swim-to-run transition) in just 5 minutes 18 seconds and set off on the 3-lap run course at a blistering pace. With two older competitors working together some distance behind him, Josh had his work cut out to maintain the distance ahead of them.

Executing a fantastic run plan, he completed the 3 laps without any possibility of the 2nd and 3rd placed competitors ever catching him. Completing the 3km run section in just 11 minutes 31 seconds Josh comfortably secured 1st place, with a total time of 16 minutes 49 seconds.

In exchange he received the smallest First Place trophy ever to exist!
Jordan Channon (Year 8) selected to Represent South-West in British Triathlon Inter-Regional ChampionshipsUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Kelly College swimmer Jordan Channon was one of two 12-year-old boys selected to represent the South West in the British Triathlon Inter-Regional Championships which took place in Wales on Sunday 19 September. The event brings together the most promising young triathletes from around Great Britain; each of the 11 regions sends a team of 14 athletes to represent them in three age groups. The triathletes were disappointed on the Sunday morning when the announcement was made that, due to the water temperature in the lake being too low to swim in, the race would now be held as a duathlon, consisting of a 550 metre run followed by a 4 km cycle (on a very challenging course in the Welsh Valleys), followed by a 1.8 km run around Parc Bryn Bach. Jordan was racing in the Tristar 2 age group against 21 other boys, all being the top two in their regions. He was in 6th place coming off the bike but had a fantastic 1.8 km run, overtaking three athletes to finish in a podium position of 3rd. As well as competing for individual honours, athletes also score points for their region. The South West narrowly missed out on 3rd place overall, coming a very commendable 4th out of 11 regions.

Parc Bryn Bach hosted the finale to the British Triathlon season on the same day which meant that many of the elite triathletes were racing the same course as Jordan, who was lucky enough to meet many of his sporting idols, including Alistair Brownlee (2009 World Champion), Jonathon Brownlee (2010 U23 World Champion) and Tim Don (2010 British Triathlon Super Series Winner).

Wednesday 22 September - Devon Cup Round 1

Kelly College 1st XV           79
Churston Grammar 1st XV    0

With little known of Churston Grammar and their rugby credentials, the 1st XV prepared well the week before. This was shown from the start with Harry Brown scoring 1 of his 5 tries in the first minutes of the game. From here on in Kelly took control of the game and shut down Churston at every given opportunity. The game plan was cleverly structured by Harry MacManus at fly-half, with him pulling the strings and feeding the forwards to drive the ball forwards and also setting the backs running at pace at the correct time.
With all the players on the pitch playing well, everyone was keen to get their hands on the ball. This was shown in the amount of players that scored tries, including Pete Meachin, Jack Lindsey, Sam Lindsey, Ben Murphy, Harry MacManus, Ryan Nichol and Chris Swash.

Saturday 18 September - Shebbear College

Kelly College 1st XV – 46
Shebbear College 1st XV – 10

With 3 weeks training under their belts, the Kelly 1st XV were well prepared for the first match of the season. This showed in the first 5 minutes of the game when the forwards scored the opening try of the season with a rolling maul. With the team on a high and having the forward momentum they looked to play at a fast pace, putting pressure on Shebbear in both attack and defence. With the pressure being exerted it was not long until Kelly scored their second try of the game, again coming from the forwards and another push over try.
With the team scoring 23 points in both halves of the game, it clearly showed that the skill level and fitness had paid off and with a number of tries scored out on the wing, the team have now set the standard of play for the year, in which they should be looking to continue the good form.
Old Kelleian Hockey MatchUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

The Kelly 1st XI started out nervously, expecting a strong Old Kelleian team. It took a while for the team to get into their usual standard of play, letting in a goal from the powerful OK attack. However the team came back strong with Laura Siggelow scoring a goal with support from Olivia Eadie. The team’s confidence was short lived when the OKs came back strong, forcing the backs to defend a series of short corners and with some excellent stick work by goal keeper, Cat Bell, the team managed not to concede. In the final few minutes of the game an excellent attacking move starting with Olivia Eadie in the mid, supported by Annie Court led to an excellent goal finished off by Amy Osborne. Special mention must go to Player of the Match, Freya Semken who played consistently and with great determination throughout the match.

Vicky Callow Placed at SW Regional TriathlonUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Kelly Swimming National Squad member, 13-year-old Vicky Callow, was placed 7th overall last weekend at the South West Regional Triathlon at Plymouth College.

Vicky went along, having never used a pentathlon-type gun, not owning her own gun with no practice prior to the event. She borrowed a club gun and still managed to hit the target several times! Vicky followed this with a superb Personal Best in the 100m swim (1:6.50), gaining a 1st place at this phase. Her 1500m run went very smoothly and she was placed 7th overall.

Vicky commented afterwards that, although a little apprehensive about competing because of the shooting phase, she was very proud to have won the swimming event for Kelly College.

Headmaster, Dr Graham Hawley, commented – “I am absolutely thrilled that all the hard work of the students has been rewarded with such a good set of results and am delighted that the teachers’ efforts have been recognised. This year's leavers have gained places on a wide variety of University courses which include Architecture, Engineering, Economics, Design Management, Environmental Science, International Business, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Nursing, Physics, Sport and Fitness Management and Theology to name but a few. I know that Kelly has prepared them to achieve great things and I wish them all the very best as they move on to the next stage of their education.”

Once again, despite having excellent examination results, Kelly College will not appear in the league tables published in the press. Dr Hawley explained, “Kelly is a small school that prides itself on providing the best education for each and every pupil. We remain committed to providing an all-round education and a full-extra-curricular programme of sporting, cultural and creative activities. Kelly College is an inclusive school and is about so much more than measuring the academic success of the brightest pupils. One only has to look at what the pupils have achieved outside the classroom this year, to see that there is a healthy balance in the education we offer.”

Oli succeeds in cross Channel challengeUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Congratulations to Oliver Hancox, 15, who has succeeded in his bid to become the youngest person to sail single-handed across the English Channel, raising money for Cancer Research in memory of his Dad.

Oli wanted to undertake a challenge which would raise both money and awareness for Cancer Research, but also make his father proud. His father, Neil Hancox, was the first person to windsurf across the English Channel in the 1980s and undertaking a similar challenge seemed, to Oliver, a fitting way to remember him. Before he set off, Oliver said: “This is one of the most important things I have ever done. I hope to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research, as well as boost awareness of the charity and its work. Cancer affects so many people and I think this is why the support I am seeing is already so strong. My Dad always loved adventure and this seems to have been passed down to me too. I am a little scared, but also incredibly excited and pleased that I can do my bit to help people in the future.”

Oliver had been planning the trip for over two years. His boat is a 1969 Silhouette called "Cariad" - meaning "Love" in Welsh. Oli set sail in Cariad on Saturday and crossed the Channel to Trebeurden, (a port next to Roscoff). Oli said, 'Cariad was fantastic, she averaged 5 knots all the way. The 105 miles took just under 24hrs.'

Oli would like to thank everyone for their kind support and donations.

KELLY COLLEGE CCF CAMP (03-09 July 2010)Use SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Last Saturday (3rd July) 14 cadets from Kelly College joined the Combined Cadet Force Summer Camp at RAF St Mawgan near Newquay, where they joined cadets from 12 other Schools. The cadets enjoyed a challenging week of activities that included: paint-balling, drill, kayaking, raft racing, shooting and an introduction to coasteering. The week culminated in a blank-firing exercise in which Kelly College once again successfully defeated the dastardly Kernow Catastrophe with a well executed dawn attack in the Penhale Training Area. The Kelly cadets produced some outstanding performances during the course of the week. James Coone achieved top marks on the ranges firing the Light Support Weapon, while the team as whole came first in the Skill-at-Arms stand of the Wyvern Trophy Competition and achieved a creditable 3rd place in the overall competition. Krista Cooke was voted Cadet of the Week by her teammates.

Physics Trip 2010

On the 17th of June the Kelly College sixth form physics group departed on their school trip to CERN located in both Switzerland and France. On the first day of their three day trip they visited ISO’s (International Organisation for Standardisation) central building situated in Geneva where they were given presentations about what ISO is, what they do and the importance of their work (developing and publishing international standards). It was very informative and relevant for those of the students thinking of studying engineering.

On the second day the Kelly students visited CERN – the European Centre for Nuclear Research. The place where scientists are looking for the mysterious particles created at the beginning of time. Particles such as the Higgs Boson (often known as the ‘God’ particle) that will explain the existence of gravity. At CERN the Kelly students were shown around by Dr. Vincent Smith (MBE) from the University of Bristol, who was very knowledgeable about all that goes on at the Large Hadron Collider. Students gained invaluable insight and detailed answers to all of their questions. The students were shown around many different areas of CERN including various particle accelerators, the Microcosm exhibition, the ATLAS detector and the gigantic computer centre.

Afterwards the students were treated to a trip to Lake Geneva where they got to see the Jet d'Eau (a large water fountain which fires water 140m in the air), took boat rides across the lake and also swam in the lake. On the third and final day the students were allowed to explore the streets of Geneva before catching their flight back to Bristol.
OLIVER HANCOX - English Channel ChallengeUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Oliver Hancox, currently in the Fourth Form at Kelly College and a member of Russell House is planning to become the youngest person to sail single-handed across the English Channel.

After losing his father to cancer two years ago, Oliver wanted to undertake a challenge which would raise both money and awareness for Cancer Research, but also make his father proud. His father, Neil Hancox, was the first person to windsurf across the English Channel in a team relay in 1983 and undertaking a similar challenge seemed, to Oliver, a fitting way to remember him.

Oliver will be sailing the 115 miles from Plymouth to Roscoff in a five metre, Silhouette Mk II Hurley. The journey is estimated to take around 24 hours and, all being well with the weather, Oliver plans to set sail on Monday 31st May. The boat, named Cariad, was carefully restored over the summer to prepare for the challenge and has remained berthed in Mayflower Marina, Plymouth, free of charge throughout the training period with the money instead being donated to Cancer Research.

Oliver says: "This is one of the most important things I have ever done. I hope to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research, as well as boost awareness of the charity and its work. Cancer affects so many people and I think this is why the support I am seeing is already so strong. My Dad always loved adventure and this seems to have been passed down to me too. I am a little scared, but also incredibly excited and pleased that I can do my bit to help people in the future."
Currently almost half of Oliver’s £10, 000 target has been raised. Your donations would be most gratefully received. To find out more about Oliver's challenge, or to donate online, visit: www.channelchallenge.co.uk or http://www.justgiving.com/oliverhancox

Alex raises funds for the Muluse Pioneers, ZambiaUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Alex Shephard, a Sixth Form Sports Academy student at Kelly College, will be travelling to Zambia on May 31st, to work on a game reserve and also to coach football to the local children.  Alex, who has raised sponsorship from completing the 55 mile Ten Tors Challenge, has ordered new football kit, with the team insignia, for the team he is to coach, and he is raising money to pay for new football boots for all team members.

Alex (17) is delighted to be accepted to take part in this new challenge and has arranged everything himself, from the first approach, to raising money for the football team. Alex said,  “I will be able to use this experience towards my Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award and also put into practice the coaching techniques I have learned on the National Diploma course”.  “The brilliant thing about the Sports Diploma I am taking is the flexibility it gives me to participate in projects such as this, without compromising my academic studies”.

The football team Alex is raising money for is the Muluse Pioneers. This team was set up by Tavistock man and Old Kelleian, Paul Barnes, when he went to Zambia to work. The team play in a local league and struggle to afford kit, money for travel and new training equipment. Alex commented, “If I can help to make a difference, no matter how small, it will be hugely rewarding for both the team and myself.”
LAMDA Successes at KellyUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).

The most recent results bring this year's total (so far) to 295 examinations taken - 18 of which were at Grade 8. Many of the exams taken were Grade 6 and above, all of which earn UCAS points which can be claimed from 2009.

Pictured are some of this term's successful Grade 8 students.

Devizes to Westminster Canoe MarathonUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Congratulations to the Kelly crews who successfully completed this year's Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon.
The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race is recognised to be one of the toughest canoe races in the world. It starts in Devizes in Wiltshire and finishes 125 miles later at Westminster Bridge, in the heart of London. It is held over the Easter weekend each year and has been a fixture in the British sporting calendar since 1948. However, the DW is much more than just a canoe race - it’s an adventure! It forces competitors to dig deep into their reserves of physical and mental stamina, which is why the race is often called “The canoeists’ Everest”. Having the technical skill to paddle a kayak or canoe is essential, but the most important quality needed to complete DW is raw determination. The reward for making the mighty effort needed to cross the finish line is a sense of satisfaction so profound that many paddlers can’t resist coming back year after year.

Kelly are one of the small number of schools who regularly contest the DW and the fleet has grown from a single kayak in 1997 to twelve boats in 2009. Kelly have twice won the School's team event, which takes the cumulative times of the fastest three boats and have the proud record of never having a boat fail to complete the marathon.

This year, unfortunately, on day 1 disaster struck for Lucy Jones with the recurrence of a partially healed wrist injury after 13 miles which forced her to retire and, in the absence of anyone else, Mr Huish was forced to step in and paddled with Darcey Ball. Farther down the canal disaster had also struck Tom and James with a broken steering line. Despite the problems experienced en route the Senior A team still managed to finish fifth, narrowly beating the Senior B team who finished sixth overall.

This year’s winners of the Ohlenschlager Shield for the fastest Kelly boat were George Humble-Smith and Tristan Hext who completed the 125 miles in 19hrs 42mins and 37 sec. Seven of the ten crews finished in under the 21 hrs 34 min target set by Mr Huish and for the first time ever all boats finished in under 24 hours.

The crews in full: George Humble-Smith & Tristan Hext, George Harold & Cameron Carpenter-Warren, Tom Bury & James Macfarlane, Owen Gorringe & Rupert Searle, Jonathan Croft & Jonathan Elliott, Tom Rickard & Will Sorrell, Laura Sivyer & Alice Kneen, Sophie von der Groeben & Catherine Burton, Catriona Bell & Natasha Dawes, Darcey Ball & Lucy Jones (and Roger Huish, and Freddie Dawes, and Anastasia Steed).

Well done to all those involved and many thanks to all the Kelly staff who coach the teams and to all the parents and brothers and sisters for keeping the crews going throughout the four day event.

Old Kelleian 1st XI v Kelly College 1st XI – match drawn

Old Kelleians – 186 all out

Kelly College – 116 for 4

With a very strong Old Kelleian team it was going to be a tough day for a weakened Kelly 1st team due to Ten Tors. This however did not stop the team putting in a very sound display, with a few newcomers making a name for themselves - Sam Goldstone showed his excellence in the field with some very good fielding which led to a run out. The Old Kelleians lost a couple of early wickets but a sound batting display from Freddy Frost, with a century, gave them a very respectable score for the Kelly 1st team to chase.
With a change in the batting order for the 1st team, Harry Macmanus and Jonny Elliot put together a very strong start with a partnership of just short of the century. It only left the rest of the batsmen to hold off the tight bowling of the opposition to see out the draw. It was a very good performance from both sides and a good confidence boost for the 1st team boys to put together a good all round display.

Old Kelleian 1st Team – Freddy Frost, Jack Newton, Angus Murray, Henry Murray, Jonathan Bellamy, Will Eldred, Chris Anderson, Will Davis, Charlie O’Shea, Lloyd Colin, Richard Stanyer.
Kelly College students participate in Engineering Education SchemeUse SHIFT+ENTER to open the menu (new window).
Four students from Kelly College were selected to participate in a nationwide project called The Engineering Education Scheme that would provide them with a head start to their careers.  The Kelly students were given the chance to solve a real engineering problem of interest to an important industrial company.

The scheme introduces students to the world of engineering and encourages the most able students to consider a career in Engineering and related Science and Technological subjects. It also makes a significant contribution to UCAS Application forms and can also count towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the BA Crest Award.

Over a period of 6 months, the team worked with Mr. Peter Griffiths, Safety & Technical Support Manager of DS Smith Speciality Packaging of Launceston, Cornwall, as well as a mentor from the Engineering Education Scheme, and their teacher Mr David Turnbull. DS Smith Speciality Packaging is a highly renowned packaging firm that produces cardboard boxes for well established customers such as Wrigley, amazon and Ginsters.

The team had been set a challenging task in respect of order changes on the Corrugator.  This machine produces corrugated board and can involve up to five different paper lines travelling at different speeds in excess of 250 metres per minute.  The task was to synchronise the joining up of all the different papers such that the joins were synchronised to within half a metre of finished board.  This would reduce waste and thus provide cost and environmental benefits.

Part way through the six months, the team with their teacher, mentor and DS Smith’s Safety & Technical Support Manager, took part in a three-day Residential Workshop at Plymouth University. The project was developed with the use of the university’s facilities and helpful academic advice from experts and technicians.

In order to solve the problem they had been set, the team visited Applied Automation in Plymouth – a company that designs and programmes automation equipment for use in industrial machinery – to research information about PLC’s (programmable logic controllers) and their use in industry. The team were able to successfully solve their brief by producing calculations of the machinery at DS Smith Speciality Packaging, which could be programmed into a PLC from Applied Automation.

To conclude the scheme, the team had to produce an engineering report and presentation that was reviewed by a panel of assessors at Plymouth University on a Celebration and Assessment Day.
Deputy Head Academic, Mr Rob McDermott, said “The EES represents a fantastic opportunity for students to work alongside practising engineers in a real situation. The students certainly grabbed the opportunity with both hands and have raised the bar with the quality of their presentation and technical report.”
