Last Saturday (3rd July) 14 cadets from Kelly College joined the Combined Cadet Force Summer Camp at RAF St Mawgan near Newquay, where they joined cadets from 12 other Schools. The cadets enjoyed a challenging week of activities that included: paint-balling, drill, kayaking, raft racing, shooting and an introduction to coasteering. The week culminated in a blank-firing exercise in which Kelly College once again successfully defeated the dastardly Kernow Catastrophe with a well executed dawn attack in the Penhale Training Area. The Kelly cadets produced some outstanding performances during the course of the week. James Coone achieved top marks on the ranges firing the Light Support Weapon, while the team as whole came first in the Skill-at-Arms stand of the Wyvern Trophy Competition and achieved a creditable 3rd place in the overall competition. Krista Cooke was voted Cadet of the Week by her teammates.
A group of Kelly athletes recently competed at the South West Regonal Biathlon Championships. Four of those attending successfully qualified for the British Modern Biathlon Championships to be held on Sunday 4th July 2010 at Wavertree Sports Park, Liverpool. The Kelly athletes put in top class perfomances with a very high precentage of those Kelly athletes attending gaining qualification to the British Championships. Racing across different distances, depending on their age groups, all the Kelly athletes placed in the Top Ten of their own age groups. Outstanding results all round. The Kelly athletes results were as follows: Vicky Black: 3.03.15 (200m swim) and 8.45 (2000m run) - 8th place in age group Ellen Riss White: 2.31.90 (200m swim) and 7.24.00 (2000m run) - 4th place in age group Matt Courtiss: 2.11.73 (200m swim) and 7.40 (2000m run) - 8th in age group Vicky Callow: 1.11.59 (100m swim) and 3.46 (1000m run) - 10th place in age group Josh Boon: 1.09.63 (100m swim) and 3.33.00 (1000m run) - 4th in age group Nathan Linden: 37.50 (50m m swim) and 4.06.00 (1000m run) - 6th in age group In addition, Nathan Linden (Kelly Prep Sschool), Vicky Callow, Ellen Riis White and Josh Boon all qualified for the British Modern Biathlon Championships. Good luck to these four athletes for this forthcoming Championships! | | | | Kelly College U13 Rounders Team - unbeaten success

| | | | Physics Trip 2010
On the 17th of June the Kelly College sixth form physics group departed on their school trip to CERN located in both Switzerland and France. On the first day of their three day trip they visited ISO’s (International Organisation for Standardisation) central building situated in Geneva where they were given presentations about what ISO is, what they do and the importance of their work (developing and publishing international standards). It was very informative and relevant for those of the students thinking of studying engineering.
On the second day the Kelly students visited CERN – the European Centre for Nuclear Research. The place where scientists are looking for the mysterious particles created at the beginning of time. Particles such as the Higgs Boson (often known as the ‘God’ particle) that will explain the existence of gravity. At CERN the Kelly students were shown around by Dr. Vincent Smith (MBE) from the University of Bristol, who was very knowledgeable about all that goes on at the Large Hadron Collider. Students gained invaluable insight and detailed answers to all of their questions. The students were shown around many different areas of CERN including various particle accelerators, the Microcosm exhibition, the ATLAS detector and the gigantic computer centre.
Afterwards the students were treated to a trip to Lake Geneva where they got to see the Jet d'Eau (a large water fountain which fires water 140m in the air), took boat rides across the lake and also swam in the lake. On the third and final day the students were allowed to explore the streets of Geneva before catching their flight back to Bristol.
Oliver Hancox, currently in the Fourth Form at Kelly College and a member of Russell House is planning to become the youngest person to sail single-handed across the English Channel.
After losing his father to cancer two years ago, Oliver wanted to undertake a challenge which would raise both money and awareness for Cancer Research, but also make his father proud. His father, Neil Hancox, was the first person to windsurf across the English Channel in a team relay in 1983 and undertaking a similar challenge seemed, to Oliver, a fitting way to remember him.
Oliver will be sailing the 115 miles from Plymouth to Roscoff in a five metre, Silhouette Mk II Hurley. The journey is estimated to take around 24 hours and, all being well with the weather, Oliver plans to set sail on Monday 31st May. The boat, named Cariad, was carefully restored over the summer to prepare for the challenge and has remained berthed in Mayflower Marina, Plymouth, free of charge throughout the training period with the money instead being donated to Cancer Research.
Oliver says: "This is one of the most important things I have ever done. I hope to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research, as well as boost awareness of the charity and its work. Cancer affects so many people and I think this is why the support I am seeing is already so strong. My Dad always loved adventure and this seems to have been passed down to me too. I am a little scared, but also incredibly excited and pleased that I can do my bit to help people in the future."
| | | | Alex Shephard, a Sixth Form Sports Academy student at Kelly College, will be travelling to Zambia on May 31st, to work on a game reserve and also to coach football to the local children. Alex, who has raised sponsorship from completing the 55 mile Ten Tors Challenge, has ordered new football kit, with the team insignia, for the team he is to coach, and he is raising money to pay for new football oots for all team members.
Alex (17) is delighted to be accepted to take part in this new challenge and has arranged everything himself, from the first approach to raising money for the football team. Alex said, “I will be able to use this experience towards my Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award and also put into practice the coaching techniques I have learned on the National Diploma course”. “The brilliant thing about the Sports Diploma I am taking is the flexibility it gives me to participate in projects such as this, without compromising my academic studies”. The football team Alex is raising money for is the Muluse Pioneers. This team was set up by Tavistock man and Old Kelleian, Paul Barnes, when he went to Zambia to work. The team play in a local league and struggle to afford kit, money for travel and new training equipment. Alex commented, “If I can help to make a difference, no matter how small, it will be hugely rewarding for both the team and myself.”

Kelly College was celebrating a great set of results as last term’s Speech and Drama grades were received.
Speech and Drama has been taught at Kelly for the last fourteen years by Vanessa McCarty and for the last six years, public speaking has formed part of the curriculum for everyone in the Lower Sixth. Students take oral exams with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and have always enjoyed well above average results.
The most recent results bring this year's total (so far) to 295 examinations taken - 18 of which were at Grade 8. Many of the exams taken were Grade 6 and above, all of which earn UCAS points which can be claimed from 2009.
Pictured are some of this term's successful Grade 8 students.
Easter Results - congratulations to everyone |

Congratulations to the Kelly crews who successfully completed this year's Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon. |
The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race is recognised to be one of the toughest canoe races in the world. It starts in Devizes in Wiltshire and finishes 125 miles later at Westminster Bridge, in the heart of London. It is held over the Easter weekend each year and has been a fixture in the British sporting calendar since 1948. However, the DW is much more than just a canoe race - it’s an adventure! It forces competitors to dig deep into their reserves of physical and mental stamina, which is why the race is often called “The canoeists’ Everest”. Having the technical skill to paddle a kayak or canoe is essential, but the most important quality needed to complete DW is raw determination. The reward for making the mighty effort needed to cross the finish line is a sense of satisfaction so profound that many paddlers can’t resist coming back year after year.
Kelly are one of the small number of schools who regularly contest the DW and the fleet has grown from a single kayak in 1997 to twelve boats in 2009. Kelly have twice won the School's team event, which takes the cumulative times of the fastest three boats and have the proud record of never having a boat fail to complete the marathon.
This year, unfortunately, on day 1 disaster struck for Lucy Jones with the recurrence of a partially healed wrist injury after 13 miles which forced her to retire and, in the absence of anyone else, Mr Huish was forced to step in and paddled with Darcey Ball. Farther down the canal disaster had also struck Tom and James with a broken steering line. Despite the problems experienced en route the Senior A team still managed to finish fifth, narrowly beating the Senior B team who finished sixth overall.
This year’s winners of the Ohlenschlager Shield for the fastest Kelly boat were George Humble-Smith and Tristan Hext who completed the 125 miles in 19hrs 42mins and 37 sec. Seven of the ten crews finished in under the 21 hrs 34 min target set by Mr Huish and for the first time ever all boats finished in under 24 hours.
The crews in full: George Humble-Smith & Tristan Hext, George Harold & Cameron Carpenter-Warren, Tom Bury & James Macfarlane, Owen Gorringe & Rupert Searle, Jonathan Croft & Jonathan Elliott, Tom Rickard & Will Sorrell, Laura Sivyer & Alice Kneen, Sophie von der Groeben & Catherine Burton, Catriona Bell & Natasha Dawes, Darcey Ball & Lucy Jones (and Roger Huish, and Freddie Dawes, and Anastasia Steed).
Well done to all those involved and many thanks to all the Kelly staff who coach the teams and to all the parents and brothers and sisters for keeping the crews going throughout the four day event.
| | | | Old Kelleian 1st XI v Kelly College 1st XI – match drawn
Old Kelleians – 186 all out
Kelly College – 116 for 4
With a very strong Old Kelleian team it was going to be a tough day for a weakened Kelly 1st team due to Ten Tors. This however did not stop the team putting in a very sound display, with a few newcomers making a name for themselves - Sam Goldstone showed his excellence in the field with some very good fielding which led to a run out. The Old Kelleians lost a couple of early wickets but a sound batting display from Freddy Frost, with a century, gave them a very respectable score for the Kelly 1st team to chase.
With a change in the batting order for the 1st team, Harry Macmanus and Jonny Elliot put together a very strong start with a partnership of just short of the century. It only left the rest of the batsmen to hold off the tight bowling of the opposition to see out the draw. It was a very good performance from both sides and a good confidence boost for the 1st team boys to put together a good all round display.
Old Kelleian 1st Team – Freddy Frost, Jack Newton, Angus Murray, Henry Murray, Jonathan Bellamy, Will Eldred, Chris Anderson, Will Davis, Charlie O’Shea, Lloyd Colin, Richard Stanyer.
| | | | Four students from Kelly College were selected to participate in a nationwide project called The Engineering Education Scheme that would provide them with a head start to their careers. The Kelly students were given the chance to solve a real engineering problem of interest to an important industrial company. The scheme introduces students to the world of engineering and encourages the most able students to consider a career in Engineering and related Science and Technological subjects. It also makes a significant contribution to UCAS Application forms and can also count towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the BA Crest Award. Over a period of 6 months, the team worked with Mr. Peter Griffiths, Safety & Technical Support Manager of DS Smith Speciality Packaging of Launceston, Cornwall, as well as a mentor from the Engineering Education Scheme, and their teacher Mr David Turnbull. DS Smith Speciality Packaging is a highly renowned packaging firm that produces cardboard boxes for well established customers such as Wrigley, amazon and Ginsters. The team had been set a challenging task in respect of order changes on the Corrugator. This machine produces corrugated board and can involve up to five different paper lines travelling at different speeds in excess of 250 metres per minute. The task was to synchronise the joining up of all the different papers such that the joins were synchronised to within half a metre of finished board. This would reduce waste and thus provide cost and environmental benefits. Part way through the six months, the team with their teacher, mentor and DS Smith’s Safety & Technical Support Manager, took part in a three-day Residential Workshop at Plymouth University. The project was developed with the use of the university’s facilities and helpful academic advice from experts and technicians. In order to solve the problem they had been set, the team visited Applied Automation in Plymouth – a company that designs and programmes automation equipment for use in industrial machinery – to research information about PLC’s (programmable logic controllers) and their use in industry. The team were able to successfully solve their brief by producing calculations of the machinery at DS Smith Speciality Packaging, which could be programmed into a PLC from Applied Automation. To conclude the scheme, the team had to produce an engineering report and presentation that was reviewed by a panel of assessors at Plymouth University on a Celebration and Assessment Day.
Deputy Head Academic, Mr Rob McDermott, said “The EES represents a fantastic opportunity for students to work alongside practising engineers in a real situation. The students certainly grabbed the opportunity with both hands and have raised the bar with the quality of their presentation and technical report.”

Four Kelly students competed for Devon on Saturday 27th February at the South West Schools' Cross Country Championships, held at Truro School.
There were seventy runners representing seven counties in all races.
In the Minor Boys race, Jordan Channon finished eighth, Harry Dunlop 20th and Josh Boon 21st, a superb effort from all boys. The Devon Minor boy team finished second, just four points behind the winners Somerset.
These three boys, plus Jordan Shakespeare will also be running for Kelly at the Stover Cross Country.
In the Intermediate girls race, Ellen Riis-White finished 25th, again an excellent performance running against many girls a year older than herself. We are hoping that Ellen will be selected to compete at the English Schools held in Manchester at the end of this month.
All four athletes performed superbly and were a real credit to the both the school and themselves.
Sunday's race was the first of the South West Children's Triathlon Series. It was held at the famous Castle Combe Circuit ensuring a safe, traffic free duathlon. Jordan Channon and Josh Carnell, both pupils at Kelly College, took part in this race. Jordan was the first to race in the Tristar 2 (11-12 years). He had a good 1.8 km run coming into transition in 1st place to then go out onto the race circuit for a 6km bike ride. He then had a 600 metre run and he led from start to finish completing the race in a time of 23.26mins almost 3 minutes ahead of 2nd place.
Josh has just moved up this year into the very tough Youth category (age 15-16 years) where he came up against some very strong athletes. Josh started the race well and had a good 2 mile run and following a very quick transition headed out to the track for a 10 mile cycle. He then followed this by a further mile run to come well placed in 6th in a total time of 48.48 minutes which is an excellent achievement considering he has just stepped up to this level.
Congratulations to Lauren Steadman who won the category of Junior Sportswomen and came runner up in the Overall Sports Personality. Lauren wanted to thank everyone who voted for her and she said she had a fantastic evening with her whole family, (Mum, Dad and Ellie) who went along with her. There were over 300 people attending the Awards dinner and ceremony and Lauren said it was great to see so many other athletes and sports personalities from her local area.
On February 27th, many familiar faces returned to Kelly to partake in the annual Men's Old Kelleian Hockey. The OK team came out in full force, including last year’s 1st XI Captain Ollie MacManus, and some older boys too. Mr Tomalin and Mr Ryder also volunteered to fill in the spaces, Mr Tomalin in defence and Mr Ryder in goal. Adam Hurst (Old Kelleian Captain) won the toss against Bob Carr (1st XI Captain), giving them the advantage in the first half with the 1st XI playing into the sun. The OK's put out a very strong and competitive side resulting in a 1-0 victory by half time. As the second half set in, the 1st XI boys’ fitness became evident and they used it to their advantage stretching the OK's. Will Gray scored from a reverse stick shot making the score level once again. Everything was still to fight for, and the game appeared as even as ever. However, in the last dying moments of the game, an impressive cross from Will Gray resulted in Harry MacManus' deciding goal; a nice touch and the ball was in the back of the goal. This made the score 2-1 when the full time whistle blew.
Twelve Kelly athletes took part in the English Schools Cross-country county championships at Great Torrington, North Devon, earlier this month. The weather was perfect but the ground was very challenging.
This was a proper cross-country course with deep, wet and sticky mud, plenty of hills and camber to test even the hardiest of runners. But no one was worried about what lay ahead, having worked and trained on the hills around Kelly all winter.
All the races were exciting and gave the spectators plenty to watch. Kelly College came away with four runners having qualified to wear a Devon vest at the next round - the South West Championships which take place at Truro on 27th February.
The Year Seven boys race produced the best race of the day with Jordan Channon the overall winner, Harry Dunlop in sixth place and Josh Boon in tenth place (pictured). Ellen Riis White was seventh in the intermediate girls' race, and Christian Brown was eleventh in the intermediate boys - just missing out on selection. Jordan, Harry, Josh and Ellen will compete at the South West Championships.
Congratulations and best of luck at the next stage to all our runners.
The pupils at Kelly Preparatory School and Kelly College joined forces to raise money for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal. The children at Kelly Prep had a mufti day, wearing the colours of the Haiti Flag, which raised £610 - this included donations from parents and the children were even bringing their pocket money to go towards the appeal. The Prep School Parents’ Association held a coffee morning where they raised over £400 in donations. In total, Kelly College Preparatory School raised over £1000. In the senior school, pupils and teachers wore Hats for Haiti, and also raised money from a disco. In total Kelly should be able to help buy 4 Shelterboxes which will go out to Haiti.
Thank you to everyone for their support.

Students take oral exams with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and have always enjoyed well above average results.
The most recent results have been particularly good with 132 examinations taken – 11 of which were at Grade 8. Many of the exams taken were Grade 6 and above, all of which earn UCAS points which can be claimed from 2009.

On Wednesday 10th February the next star performer in the Kelly College Concert Society 50th Season visits the College’s Melvin Hall. The Australian pianist, Jayson Gillham, is a graduate and medallist of the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, where he studied with Leah Horwitz. Since moving to London in 2007, Jayson has been awarded the Royal Academy of Music’s Bach, Beethoven, Romantic and 20th Century piano prizes. He was the first prize winner of the 2008 Prix d’Amadè de Piano, as well as the 2008 Australian National Piano Award. In 2005, aged 18, Jayson was awarded third prize in the London International Piano Competition, when he played Liszt’s Concerto No. 1 in E-flat in the Royal Festival Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sian Edwards.
His recital at Kelly will include masterworks by Bach, Schubert, Bartok and Chopin plus the ominously titled "AK-47" by his countryman Matthew Hindson. The concert starts at 7.45pm and tickets will be available on the door.
The Kelly College Current Affairs and Discussion Society welcomed Mr Adam Symons the Liberal Democrat PPC for the West Devon and Torridge constituency to their meeting last week. Mr Symons spoke about the meaning of democracy and then outlined the policies of the Liberal Democratic Party . There followed a lively discussion covering a wide range of contemporary social, economic and environmental issues. It is hoped that, during the course of the term, the Society will invite into the school representatives of all the main political parties to enable pupils to glean a greater understanding of the political process.
Pictured with the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress of Plymouth are Felix Davies, Tom Every, Ella Ellis and Mia Keogh from Kelly College Swim Squad.
The swimmers were each winners of their age groups for BAGCAT awards at the City Of Plymouth Swimming Gala at the end of last year.
Felix was in the 14 year category, Tom in the 12, Ella the 10 and Mia the 13 year age group.
They, and all the other winners, were presented with their trophies at a reception in their honour at the Lord Mayor's Parlour recently.
Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme - Gold Presentation 2010
Despite the challenges of the weather on Saturday 9 th January the annual Gold Duke of Edinburgh Presentation went ahead at County Hall. Three students from Kelly College; James Macfarlane, Georgina Killingbeck and Megan Mackenzie were presented with their awards from Sir John Cave Bt DL, the Vice Lord-Lieutenant.
As always the range of activities undertaken by the Gold achievers was both fascinating and inspirational; James took part in a gruelling ‘Tall Ships Challenge’ and managed to be the only member of the crew excepting the captain that was not sick, Megan spent a wonderful time in Cambodia helping in a local hospital that was great training as she is now studying medicine at Imperial College, London and Georgina Killingbeck now holds the distinct honour of being the first Kelleian to complete the 35, 45, 55 mile TenTors, the 125 mile Devizes to Westminster canoe marathon as well as her Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Many congratulations.
In October, several students at Kelly College were selected to participate in a nationwide programme called the Engineering Education Scheme. The Scheme provides students with an in-depth introductory experience into the business world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers. This enables students to make an informed decision about their future studies and career. The Scheme makes a significant contribution to UCAS Application forms and can also count towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the BA Crest Award.
The students selected to participate in the programme include Darcey Ball, George Harold, Will Sorrell and Ryan Kingsley and the team is fortunate to have the expertise of Kelly DT Teacher, Mr David Turnbull, Engineer, Mr Peter Griffiths and Mentor, Mr David Hall.
The team have been set the challenging task of solving an engineering problem for a local manufacturing company in Launceston called D S Smith Packaging. The business is a highly renowned packaging firm that produces cardboard boxes for well established customers such as Wrigleys, Amazon and Ginsters. The task is to synchronise a set of splices that are made when an order change occurs within a cardboard box machine – this will not only save the company a considerable amount of money and time, but also reduce waste packaging – making the process more environmentally friendly.
The team were briefed about the task in mid-October and since then have visited the business in Launceston several times to see the machine that they would be working on. As part of the Scheme, the team took part in a residential course at the University of Plymouth from 15 -17 December. Whilst at the University, the team made considerable progress on their project thanks to the excellent facilities and academic advice that the university had to offer.
During the three-day residential, the team split into two groups in order to get the most out of their time at the University – Darcey and George concentrated their efforts on making calculations for the operation of the machine, whilst Will and Ryan looked into a way of presenting the project visually using materials provided by the University. The team were also able to see a working PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), learnt how to use CAD software and collectively developed a working model of the machine using Excel to prove that their calculations were correct.
In the following weeks, the team plan to make several further visits to the factory based in Launceston to input their calculations into the machine and to experiment with sensors, before attending a final Presentation Day to conclude the Scheme in Spring.
On Wednesday the 24 March, the Kelly College Concert Society’s glittering 50th Season continues with a recital by the outstanding young classical saxophonist, Hannah Marcinowicz accompanied by pianist Richard Shaw. Hannah is currently an artist on the Tillett Trust Young Artists' Platform, which led to her Wigmore Hall debut last year. In 2007, she gave a recital at the Royal Festival Hall as an award winner of the Philharmonia Orchestra Martin Musical Scholarship Fund, and last year she gave a Park Lane Group Young Artists' recital at the Purcell Room, where she premiered a new work by Giles Swayne to universal critical acclaim. Following the success of this recital, the Park Lane Group has awarded her a Wigmore Hall recital in 2009. Her programme includes works by Marcello, Debussy and Glazunov. The concert takes place in the Melvin Hall, Kelly College and begins at 7.45pm, tickets will be available on the door.
Congratulations to Hector Jourdan (Year11) who has won first prize in the London Camera Exchange Photographic Competition (December) in conjunction with the Dartmoor Preservation Association. His photograph was entitled 'Watching the Wedding'.

At the end of last term, 39 pupils and six teachers went on an exciting trip to Cologne. The main aim was to experience Christmas in Germany, with its special atmosphere, famous markets and interesting food, and for those who study the language, to practise their German. The many beautifully decorated markets were one of the highlights but so was a live handball match in the Köln Arena; what an amazing sport! The group also visited the Cologne Cathedral, climbed the 533 steps up the Cathedral tower, explored the Lindt Chocolate Museum and went ice-skating.
Congratulations to Rebekah Meachin who was recently presented with her Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Buckingham Place by the Duke of Wessex, HRH Prince Edward.
Kelly College were delighted to present their version of Oh What a Lovely War, by Joan Littlewood, Theatre Workshop, Charles Chilton, Gerry Raffles, and Members of the Original Cast.
Performances took place on 2nd, 3rd and 4th December to packed audiences.
Synopsis
Oh What A Lovely War!
It is 1914 and the world is about to embark upon one of the most ferocious conflicts in history – a conflict that would kill 15 million combatants and wound another 20 million, leaving the nations of the world forever scarred. It was the war to end all wars – or so it was believed – a war that would shape the twentieth century.
In 1917, the headmistress of Bournemouth High School for Girls announced to her sixth form: "I have come to tell you a terrible fact. Only one out of 10 of you girls can ever hope to marry ... It is a statistical fact. Nearly all the men who might have married you have been killed." An age of innocence had passed away, for ever. And yet out of the carnage came some of the century’s greatest music, art and literature.
‘Oh What A Lovely War’ presents us with an arsenal of songs, comic sketches and shared stories as an Edwardian end-of-pier Pierrot troupe reveal the horrific, shocking and at times farcical truths of war. The show is as relevant today as when it first appeared in London in 1963. Joan Littlewood’s and Theatre Workshop’s brilliant, satirical musical remains one of the great landmarks of British theatre.
"Welcome to our little pierrot show: ‘The Merry Roosters’."
OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR!
The action of the play takes place at the end of a pier somewhere on the south coast of England

On 9th – 10th November, a group of 20 Drama and Theatre Studies students travelled to London for an overnight stay in the West End accompanied by their teacher, Miss Smith, and Mr Collin. Over the two days, students participated in two workshops; firstly at the Pineapple Studios in Covent Garden where we did a dance and movement workshop with a member of the cast of Billy Elliot. We interpreted and choreographed Billy’s Angry Dance routine, and experimented with building character. The second workshop was conducted by an actor currently starring in the West End production of Blood Brothers. He took us through various multi-roling and improvisational activities, focusing on the ‘chase scene’ in The 39 Steps. We were all then very excited to sit in the audience to watch these amazing productions. Billy Elliot had us all in tears, whilst The 39 Steps had us all marvelling at the talent of four actors playing over 150 parts. We certainly experienced a full gamut of theatrical experiences! Great fun was had by all and we hope to return to the West End again next year.
We were delighted to welcome the well-known and highly-respected children’s author, Tim Bowler, to Kelly last week. After being shown around the school by pupils, Tim then spent the afternoon with the very excited 1st and 2nd Formers. Mrs Lanyon Jones' 2nd Form class are currently studying one of Tim’s books, ‘Storm Catchers’ and are all thoroughly enjoying it!
Tim talked to the pupils about how he became a writer and encouraged all of them to keep using their imagination to write their own stories. Tim read from a number of his books and answered all sorts of questions from the boys and girls. The pupils then bought over one hundred of his books and Tim kindly signed every one of them. All the children and their teachers had a wonderful time and they thanked Tim for spending the afternoon at Kelly.
This year’s Remembrance Sunday Service was a very moving occasion, with a thought-provoking address by Canon Michael Ridley who recounted some of his own personal memories of the Second World War. The choir sang a beautiful rendition of ‘And I Saw a New Heaven’, and uplifting words were read from the Book of Revelation. Hearing the Last Post and observing the two minutes silence around the War Memorial was very poignant. The sun emerged in time for the final prayers, illuminating the wreaths of poppies and filling all who attended with a renewed sense of gratitude for those who had sacrificed themselves.
Mr David Wilson, Second Master, Roseanna Perry and Tom Bury read ‘Tributes’ from the school war record. The College CCF provided the Guard of Honour, and the School kept two minutes silence, before wreaths were laid by the Headmaster, Dr Hawley, together with Sandy Osborne and Anastasia Steed, on behalf of the school, and by, Mr Chris Morley, the Chairman of the OK Club, on behalf of the Old Kelleians, and Mr David Milford, Chairman of Governors on behalf of The Conway Club. The pupils, Old Kelleians and parents present paid their personal tributes by placing their own poppies on the war memorial.

Matthew Courtis, 4th Form, recently took part in the Optimist Volvo Musto end of Season Regatta in Rutland Water during the weekend of 10th/11th October. This was the first time Matthew had sailed in the UK and the first time out on the water since August when he took part in the Optimist World Championships.
Conditions were a little different than he was used to in the Cayman Islands and with overcast skies fingers were crossed that it would not rain although otherwise the conditions were cold but good with plenty of wind. However, despite his discomfort Matthew managed a 12th, 11th and 15th in the first day of racing, leaving him in around 20th position in a fleet of 228 boats.
On the second day Matthew borrowed a dry suit and this proved to do the trick and Matthew posted two 2nd place finishes on the second day and moved up to 12th place overall at the end of the competition.
Last Saturday, Max Levene, a 6th Form pupil at Truro School, suffered a severe injury during a rugby match against Kelly. In a terrible accident, Max broke his neck and was immediately attended to by medical staff present before being taken to Derriford Hospital. Max has since undergone an operation and at the moment it is uncertain as to the extent of the damage. Our thoughts and prayers are with Max, his family, his team mates and friends.
We have spoken to the whole school in Chapel and also to those most closely affected. We are all deeply shocked by the accident and pupils are being supported by our pastoral team. We are also in close contact with Paul Smith, the Headmaster at Truro School.
Our hearts go out to the whole of the Truro School community at this very difficult time as they try to come to terms with this tragic accident.
Wednesday 30th September
Kelly College 1st XI v Plymouth College.
1 - 1 Full Time, 3 - 2 On Flicks to Kelly College.
The unusual pitch surface took time to adjust with low turning and fast pace of the ball. After some equal open play, Kelly distributed the ball and was awarded a short corner. Kelly took Plymouth College by surprise and by a hard strike by Kate Eadie, top of D, we secured an early goal.
Half time came and went and Kelly did well to defend and managed to block several strong hits at the top of the D with much confidence by Annie Court. Kelly fought hard but unfortunately Plymouth scored in one of the last moments of play after a deflection from a short corner. This left the final score a 1 - 1 draw.
Due to rules of the tournament, both teams had to play 5 minutes each way extra time to finalise a result. After some strong positive play from both teams the outcome was 0 - 0. Penalty flicks made the final decision of the match. Despite the tense atmosphere, Cat made some excellent saves and successful flicks from Kate Eadie, Olivia Eadie and Georgie Killingbeck meant Kelly went on to deservedly win and go through to the next round. We look forward to playing with the full strength squad in the next round, later in the season.
Monday 28th September – U13 A Girls Hockey v Mount House 0 - 0
A really good game with end to end action. Kelly was keen to be the dominant attacking team but could not find the back of the goal. Georgia Donnelly had some good runs up the pitch but was unable to link the ball with any other Kelly player. When under pressure in the ‘D’, Rosannah Morel had an excellent game and made some superb saves. Phoebe Jourdan and Isobel Germon, who are playing up a year, had good games and Isobel had a better second half. The Kelly girls defended short corners well and prevented any direct strikes at goal and only narrowly missed out from scoring from an attacking short corner. The final result was a justified draw.
Monday 28th September - U13B Girls Hockey v Mount House 4 - 1
This was an excellent victory for the B squad and with all girls playing well as a team it was inevitable that the girls were able to put some goals past the keeper from Mount House. Thea Crosby worked well and with Eleanor Partington captaining, the team had a good structure. This is a good start to the season for the B team. Kate Blackwell worked tirelessly in defence and with Lauren Ross making her debut performance for the team it was the perfect ending to the match.
Saturday 3 October 2009
Kelly College 1st XI v Kingsley School 1st XI 14 - 0
The Kelly team started the game positively with most of the possession. After a few runs down the centre by Georgie Killingbeck, three goals were set up in a two on one with the goalie, by excellent positioning from Lizzie Tilley. The fourth goal was from a short corner by Annie Court, using the right slip.
Two more goals were made from open play and Olivia Eadie converted a penalty flick. The majority of short corners were successful for the Kelly side, with strong hits from top D – Olivia Eadie and Annie Court. Throughout the game there was evidence of good use of the self-pass, and Kelly pushed up maintaining an attacking shape. Laura Sivyer made some solid tackles from the back and Sophie Bassett had some leading runs in the mid-field. A very convincing win overall, playing as a unit and maintaining the Kelly spirit.

Kelly College 1st XV 0
Exeter School 1st XV 15
With this being the second fixture between the 2 schools in the past month, it was interesting to see how much Kelly had improved. Kelly College started well, but with captain Andy Chesters injuring his knee early on, winger Tom Wylie having to be taken off with a clash of heads and fly half Jake McIntrye also having a calf injury we had a very disruptive first 35 minutes. The first half was a closely battled affair, with Exeter scoring 1 break away try, and a drive over try from close range. Apart from that there was nothing to separate the teams.
After half time was a different matter, with both teams defending very well, Kelly had a couple of attacking opportunities which we did not capitalise on. The second half was 0-0 showing how close the game was.
A fantastic display of effort from both teams, and it showed that Kelly really do have a lot more to give.
A remarkable thirty-two pupils were presented with their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at Kelly College last week. The award is designed to help the community, improve fitness, develop new skills and for pupils to learn about teamwork within an expedition framework. Kelly has seen a vast increase in numbers taking part in the award at Gold, Silver and Bronze level with activities including National Trust volunteering, helping at retirement homes and local schools.
The group of students that have just attained their Bronze awards completed their St John’s Young Lifesaver course, have gained their National Indoor Climbing Award learned a new skill of their choice and completed expeditions in the Tamar Valley and on Dartmoor.
With the ever increasing numbers the College is looking for volunteering options within the community after Christmas. Teams of students along with a teacher will be looking to complete a regular volunteering activity to help the community on a weekly basis. If you think you might have an activity that would be suitable please contact Ian Lazenbury at Kelly College (lazenburyi@kellycollege.com).

Congratulations to the pupils who all passed their LAMDA exams this summer. There were 101 examinations taken and everyone was successful. This has been a bumper year with 353 examinations taken and 38 of these at Grade 8. Many of the exams taken were Grade 6 and above, all of which earn UCAS points.
2nd XI Girls Hockey v Torquay Girls’ Grammar
Wednesday 16th September
Final Score: 4 - 1
This was an excellent first victory for the 2nd Xi girls hockey team. The team started the match with no real positional play and not linking through the phases of the pitch and it took Torquay to score to really wake up the Kelly girls who then turned the game around in their favour and really pulled out every effort they had. Lucy Jones had an exceptional game and scored the first goal to even the score line. Not content with only scoring one goal she ran from the ball which had been fed up by Darcey Ball and Felicity Massy-Birch and Lucy Jones popped in her second goal. The Kelly girls were ecstatic to be in the lead and the second half saw a far improved team. Beth Newton as captain kept the defence solid and Lucy Perry and Amber Marshall never gave up battling. It was Lizzie Tilley who scored the next two goals as she took advantage of space and timing of the ball. The final score was a well deserved 4 – 1 victory to the Kelly girls and they now feel confident as the season progresses.
U13 Blundell’s Tournament – Saturday 19th Sept
The U13 girls did very well and only lost one match in their grouping and this was to the eventual winners of the whole tournament. Daniela Wetten was pronounced player of the tournament from the Kelly team. Daniela had worked tirelessly all day and never gave up battling for the ball to give keeper, Rosannah Morel, every chance she could of saving any shots at goal. Selina Kisby and Georgia Donnelly had excellent games and with the all the team really enjoying the tournament and working hard it was a really great and positive experience for the Kelly girls.
Girls Hockey - 1st XI Match Report
Wednesday 9th September –
Kelly 1st XI v Exeter School - LOST 2 – 1.
Kelly started off strongly against a dominant Exeter team. With constant discipline in marking the defence, they played with great strength and Cat Bell made some great saves. The hard work was apparent throughout the Kelly team and the half time score was 0-0. The Kelly team went out with a positive attitude in the second half and with a switched-on side, Kelly used Exeter’s faults to their advantage, and Olivia Eadie was able to set up a the goal for Christine Corlet in her début performance for the Kelly 1st team. With morale high, unfortunately Exeter came back fast to equal the score. Kelly battled hard, but was not able to keep Exeter’s strong persistent side out. The Final score was 2-1 to Exeter. This was Kelly’s first match of the season and with all players having a strong game, it looks to be a promising season for the Kelly side.
Players of the Match: Olivia Eadie and Cat Bell.
Saturday 12th September
Kelly 1st XI v West Buckland 1st XI - WON 6 - 0
From the very first whistle the Kelly team played in a positive and determined manner. Olivia Eadie made a great start down the right, to see Christine Corlet secure the first goal of the match on the left post. As the attacking play by Kelly continued, a tactical successful short corner was produced. Unfortunately Gabriella Murphy had an encounter with the hockey ball, breaking her nose in the defending D. Although this set Kelly back, the defence coped well throughout the match with the leading sweeper role now being played by Annie Steed. Georgie Killingbeck, placed the third goal with a 1 v 1 on the goalie from a strong counterattacking drive. Despite West Buckland’s confusing play by switching numerous times, Kelly kept their head and adapted to this. Kate Eadie, Sophie Bassett and Chrissie Corlet finalised the result by all scoring great goals during open play. The application of the new rules seemed to phase West Buckland a little whilst the Kelly girls applied them well to their advantage. Overall a very satisfying win.
Player of the match: The Team (Including Gabriella!)
Kelly U13 A VII v West Buckland - WON 6 - 0
The match opened with the Kelly girls strong in positional play. Daniela Wetten worked extremely hard in defence and when the ball was fed through to Selina Kisby in the midfield she was able to distribute it to the running play of Georgia Donnelly and Rebecca Earp. West Buckland did have a few breaks but the strong defensive midfield play from Sophie Whitfield and Amy Lloyd resulted in the opposition being stopped before any major attack could happen. Rosannah Morel made some good saves when they did get through but was never really put under too much pressure. Phoebe Jourdan had her debut game for the U13 and was a great asset up front on the attacking line up. This terrific performance bodes well for the rest of the season.
1st XV v Millfield School Saturday 12th September
Millfield School 17 – 25 Kelly College
Kelly’s first match proved to be a big confidence boost, with many players standing out and putting in a great performance. With a young side and a few new faces, the team came together and were led very well by Andy Chesters. He and Tom Rickard had a fantastic game in the back row, turning over the ball on numerous occasions, allowing Kelly to clear the ball from inside our 22. Chris Driver in the forwards also carried the ball well. Miles Ross had a fantastic debut, scoring two tries, and defending very well.
It was a fantastic whole team performance though, and all the team worked very hard for a deserved victory.
A very positive start to season, and a good basis to work from.
The Annual Cox Tor Walk took place on Sunday 6th September and the weather was perfect for the expedition. Staff, new parents, new pupils, families and pets all set off from the College, collecting their stone from the River Tavy, and walking it up to the top of Cox Tor to place them on the Kelly Cairn at the top.
Old Kelleian XI v Kelly College 1st XI
Final Score 2 - 1
The Annual OK Hockey match took place on Saturday 5th September and it was great to welcome so many Old Kelleians along to support the OK Team as well as all the OKs who played. The match was excellent with end to end action. The Kelly 1st XI girls worked extremely hard as this was their first match playing as a squad. The team worked well together and there were significant improvements in the 2nd half. The new rules were put into practise by both teams and some good positive play was made. Cat Bell made some superb saves and with numerous 5th formers playing, the girls rose to the occasion. Olivia Eadie made some great runs down the wing and the Player of Match was Annie Court.

Rhys Byrne has secured his place to read Medicine at the University of Bristol, by gaining 4 A Grades in his A-levels (Mathematics, Geography, Biology and Chemistry). Rhys not only achieved first class A-level results but he also embraced the extracurricular, sporting, cultural and creative activities that combine to make Kelly one of the best all-round educations available. Rhys successfully completed the Ten Tors challenge at all three distances (35, 45 and 55 miles), played 1st XV Rugby, captained the 2nd XI Hockey Team and the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon (twice) – this year coming 1st overall in the Veteran Junior Doubles. Rhys has been a stalwart member of the Current Affairs and Debating Society, gained success at Grade 6 LAMDA and his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Rhys has also contributed significantly to the Kelly community as Monitor and Head of House.
George Newman has achieved straight A Grades in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Further Mathematics – gaining him a place at Durham University to read Natural Sciences. George has successfully completed the Ten Tors challenge at all three distances (35, 45 and 55 miles), the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon, played 1st XV Rugby, and also played cricket and hockey for the school. George has also been heavily involved on stage in the school musical productions.
Music Scholar, Sophie Wilson has achieved 3 Grade As at A-level (Music, English Literature and Religious Studies) and she will read Music at the University of Bristol. As well as excelling on academically, Sophie has played a major part in the musical life of Kelly – passing Grade 8 in Clarinet, Piano, Singing and Music Theatre as well as leading the choir as Head Chorister, playing in the orchestra and performing as a soloist in many of the Kelly concerts. Sophie has also has had two very successful years in the Devon Youth Orchestra, and has also been offered a place in the South West Youth Orchestra as clarinettist. In addition, Sophie has also achieved LAMDA Grade 8 Verse and Prose, Grade 8 Acting and Grade 8 in Public Speaking.

Kelly is also celebrating the success of the students who have taken the BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Performance and Excellence) qualifications and all have gained their places at University.
Headmaster, Dr Graham Hawley, commented – “I am absolutely delighted for all our students - they have worked tremendously hard and they have earned these results. Our outstanding team of teachers will be pleased that all their hard work and commitment to the students has been rewarded – a huge achievement for a school that does not have a selective intake. This year's leavers have gained places on a wide variety of University courses which include, Civil Engineering, Economics, History, History of Art, Industrial Design, Medicine, Mathematics, Music and Sports Science, to name but a few. I know that they are well prepared to achieve great things in their chosen field and I wish them well as they move on to the next stage of their career.”
Once again, despite having excellent examination results, Kelly College will not appear in the league tables published in the press. Dr Hawley explained, “Kelly is a small school that prides itself on providing the best education for each and every pupil. We remain committed to providing an all-round education and a full-extra-curricular programme of sporting, cultural and creative activities. Kelly College is an inclusive school and is about so much more than measuring the academic success of the brightest pupils. One only has to look at what the pupils have achieved outside the classroom this year, to see that there is a healthy balance in the education we offer.”
In mid-July a small group from Kelly College hit the heights in the Swiss Alps. The team of Kelly College pupils, Sandy Osborne, Oliver Dibben, Peter Meachin and George Harold, supported by staff members Mr Dominic Tomalin and Dr Jeremy Hill, all under the supervision of their Mountain Guide Alun Richardson, spent a week high level trekking and mountaineering around the small town of Arolla in the Valais region of Switzerland.
The Kelly Team began their preparations for their trip to the Alps with training in the Snowdonia National Park in March. The training in North Wales tested their individual head for heights and their general levels of fitness. The team was also introduced to some of the equipment and techniques needed to move safely through the Alpine environment.
Once in Switzerland the group made use of the network of high altitude mountain huts (cabanes) in the area. Early in the week the team completed its training in Glacier safety and climbed the Pointe de Vouasson (3489m, 11,443 feet) before continuing on a route that took them deeper into the mountains.
Bad weather including 115 km/h winds and thunder storms meant that the group had to change its plans but they still managed to achieve the summit of the Pigne d’Arolla on the final day. At nearly 3800m, approximately 12,500 feet, the altitude on the upper reaches of this peak begins to have a significant effect on physical performance making the summit a real accomplishment with so little time to acclimatise.
Not long after the final words of the Founder’s Day speeches drew a conclusion to the academic year at Kelly College 47 Kelly pupils and 5 members of staff deployed on a week long Combined Cadet Force (CCF) Camp at Penhale on the North Coast of Cornwall. The camp aims to provide a challenging but fun environment in which cadets utilise and build on the skills they have acquired during their weekly CCF training afternoons.
The week started with a hard but picturesque 10 mile hike along the coastal path from Porth Chapel back up to the Penhale camp. This was followed by an opportunity to the fire the Light Support Weapon (LSW) at the Milpool Ranges on Bodmin Moor. Sylvie Ball and Rory Oxborough both achieved impressive 30/30 results. Sadly, the torrential rain eventually led to a tactical withdrawal back to camp but not before a number of Practical Leadership Tasks had been completed.
On their return to camp the cadets competed in an orienteering competition. Annie Court won the U15 girl’s category and was praised for the time she achieved over a difficult course.
On the third day the cadets moved onto Military Skills a completed 4 tough stands: Section Attacks, Bravo 2 Zero (an escape and evasion endurance course), Patrol Alley, Pilot Rescue (and camouflage and concealment stand). To the round the day off the contingent put forward three 10 man teams to participate in the Penhale Navigation Challenge (Over 16 Boys, U16 Boys and Girls). This is an event that incorporates a vehicle tow, run, command task, obstacle course and shoot on the 25m range. This is a gruelling race and one in which just finishing is no mean feat, so the cadets were particularly proud that the girls team managed to secure a silver medal in their category.
Stithians Lake played host to the Adventurous Training day during which the cadets got to try their hand at dinghy sailing, kayaking and raft building. A lucky few were taken off to have a go at Coasteering on the Newquay coastline. The senior cadets then deployed on Exercise KELLY CAMEO II. Through careful reconnaissance patrols during the night the Kelly Contingent were able to lay a successful snatch ambush and safely recover a kidnapped EU negotiator from the dastardly Kernow Catastrophe once again confounding their efforts to free the Cornish Pasty from EU regulation.
The final day on the Camp was a Section Competition followed by a very welcome foray onto the beach at Holywell Bay. The Kelly cadets returned to Kelly in an exhausted but exhilarated.
Kelly College took 26 students in 4 teams to the Brecon Beacons in Wales for their Gold and Silver Expedition towards their Duke of Edinburgh's Award. It is the culmination for many of 18 months work towards this internationally recognized award. Amongst many other activities and sports completed for the award students have helped in care homes and hospitals, raised money for charity by growing vegetables and performed voluntary work in Cambodia.
The expedition over 4 days and 3 nights was tough in the hot and humid conditions but every student that set off completed the walk and the external assessor commented on how friendly and well prepared the groups were. Indeed the group of Anastasia Steed, Gem Murphy, Beth Newton, Georgina Killingbeck, Katie Elliott and Megan Mackenzie (pictured above) gained high praise indeed when the assessor commentd on them being the best group he had seen in three years.
Outdoor Education has had an incredibly successful year at Kelly College. The Duke of Edinburgh's award has more than doubled in size with many students on the verge of completing their Gold Award and record numbers completing their Silver and Bronze awards. The Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon was once again an outstanding achievement from a committed set of paddlers and supported by an equally committed team of staff. A huge number of individuals were trained for the Ten Tors event with all team members completing, even those that don’t take part in the challenge complete the equally arduous Kelly Expedition. There has been a very successful SCUBA diving trip to Egypt, a training trip to North Wales prior to a select few taking on some of the Alpine peaks close to Chamonix this Summer, 45 students have completed their National Indoor Climbing Award. There have been adventure days for all years, climbing club and the start of the Kelly garden amongst many other experiences offered.
On 24th June, the Kelly College 2nd form produced and performed 'Treasure Island'. After spending just three days rehearsing, making props, organising costumes and learning their lines, the cast gave a highly entertaining performance which had the audience laughing and calling out in true pantomime style. With swashbuckling pirates, Indians, buried treasure and incompetent explorers, this was a fantastic show. Congratulations to all the students involved and thank you to Miss Smith and Mrs Bridger for directing, Miss Slater and the DT team for helping out with props. Well done to all.
In their annual fixture the Kelly College 1st XI took on the might of the Devon and Somerset Headmasters’ XI, captained by the new Headmaster of Kelly College this year, Dr Graham Hawley.
Similar to the ethos of the M.C.C. matches, the Headmasters batted first and got off to a slow start losing three quick wickets to the bowling of Ben Turner and Captain, Paul Smith. At 10 for 3 the Headmasters were struggling until Blundell’s came to the rescue with their Senior School and Prep School Heads’ batting with caution to take to score to 108 – 4 at the lunch break. The school continued to bowl well and eventually bowled the Headmasters’ XI out for a mere 157 on a reasonable wicket.
After the turn around the school batted very well, up until tea with Captain, Paul Smith scoring an impressive 84 not out. At the tea interval the school was 109 – 2, well on target to win the game with plenty of overs remaining. However, the Gods have not been with the 1st XI this season when having been in a winning position on three occasions the heavens opened and the match was again abandoned due to rain.

Kelly College was celebrating a great set of results as last term’s Speech and Drama grades were received.
Speech and Drama has been taught at Kelly for the last thirteen years by Vanessa McCarty and for the last six years, public speaking has formed part of the curriculum for everyone in the Lower Sixth. Students take oral exams with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA) and have always enjoyed well above average results.
The most recent results have been particularly good with 124 examinations taken – 10 of which were at Grade 8. Many of the exams taken were Grade 6 and above, all of which earn UCAS points which can be claimed from 2009.

Kelly College were delighted to present their version of The Uninvited, by Tim Kelly, from the novel by Dorothy Macardle.
Performances took place on 22nd, 23rd and 24th April to packed audiences. |
Synopsis:
The action of the play takes place in the sitting room of Cliff End, an isolated house overlooking the Bristol Channel in the West of England. The time is the 1930s.
Seeking to escape the demands of life in London, Pam Fitzgerald and her brother, Roddy, an aspiring playwright, discover a charming house in the West of England, overlooking the Irish Sea. The house, Cliff End, has long been empty, and they are able to purchase it at a suspiciously low price from crusty Commander Brooke, the village curmudgeon. The reason is soon apparent: the house has an unsavoury reputation. Fifteen years earlier a murder may or may not have occurred by the gnarled tree that can be viewed from the parlour window. Slowly, the Fitzgeralds begin to sense the evil spirit that still inhabits the house, announcing its presence with a sudden, bone-chilling cold. The sound of a woman weeping adds to the tense atmosphere, and the scent of a flowery, exotic perfume comes and goes.
The village doctor, the local gossip, and a former governess visit, with strange stories of the beautiful Mary Meredith, who once lived in the house and of the striking, unstable Carmel, who posed for a painting that led to her destruction. With the help of Mary’s daughter, Stella, a beautiful young girl whose mysterious birth holds the key to the puzzle, Cliff End is forced, at last, to reveal its dark secrets. The action then builds steadily to a truly terrifying climax, in which the ghost is discovered to be not only real but dangerous.

Congratulations to the Kelly crews who all successfully completed this year’s Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race. Nine Kelly crews took part in the DW Canoe Marathon over the Easter Weekend. |
The gruelling race is 125 miles long - the first 52 miles are along the Kennet and Avon Canal, the next 55 miles are on the River Thames and the final section is on the tidal portion of the Thames. The endurance event combines technique, stamina, and athleticism and the two person teams are reliant on a support crew providing high energy food, drinks and encouragement. Paddling for hour after hour over 4 days, the canoeists each made about 100,000 paddle strokes during the race, plus they had to negotiate their way around some 77 locks, weirs and low bridges, carrying their canoes at speed. The final day ends with a rapid dash down the tidal Thames with the finish opposite Parliament under Westminster Bridge. Many of the canoeists were sponsored and raised money for their chosen charities.
Unfortunately on day 3 disaster struck for Lizzie Tilley whose stomach reacted badly to Thames river water which meant that Lizzie, despite her protests, was deemed unfit to continue the race by the camp paramedic. Fortunately James Killingbeck was on hand to take Lizzie’s place for day 3 and enable Georgie to continue, and by day 4 Lizzie had recovered sufficiently to resume her place and complete the expedition.
The three fastest male Junior doubles crews ensured that Kelly came second in the School Team event, and the girls’ teams secured 3rd place for Kelly in the Junior Ladies Team event.
The crews in full: Tom Bury & James Macfarlane, Hayden Brown & Michael Riddiough-Allen, Jack Ellacott & Ollie Macmanus, Giles Kisby & Michael Ashley, Sinead Kenna (Tavistock College) & Carlos Citara, Roseanna Perry & Anastasia Steed, Chrissie Corlet & Robert Wilson, Gabriella Murphy & Beth Newton, Georgina Killingbeck & Lizzie Tilley.
Well done to all those involved and many thanks to all the Kelly staff who coach the teams and to all the parents and brothers and sisters for keeping the crews going throughout the four day event.
Kelly College GCSE and A-level Physics students attended the ‘Particle Physics Masterclass’ at Bristol University last week. |
The students were involved in lectures about how the scientists in CERN, Geneva are trying to recreate the conditions at the beginning of time. They analysed computer simulations of particle collisions, and took part in video-conferences with the scientists at the ‘Large Hadron Collider’ in Switzerland.
The students also took part in a competition to put their bid forward for funding of a new particle collider – in the style of ‘Dragon’s Den’. The team of Ryan Kingsley, Giles Kisby and Tom Bury pictured above (all of whom have received 100% in recent GCSE and AS level exams) ended up as the victorious team, beating strong teams from the whole of the South West.
Kelly College 34 v Chumleigh College 15 |
Kelly College U16 XV played with style and determination to convincingly win the U16 Devon Cup at Plymouth Albion RFC on a fantastic spring day made for running rugby.
Both teams had their strengths and in an intriguing game Chumleigh were stronger up front and Kelly were faster and more skilful in open play. This evolved into a game of who could outwit their opponent on the day, and the Kelly defence stayed firm throughout the contest paving the way for their victory. Centre, Sam Lindsey, opened the scoring for Kelly finishing off a well worked try out wide, and Kelly’s captain and U16 England scrum half, Oliver Massy-Birch converted from the touch line for Kelly College to take a 7 – 0 early lead. Chumleigh replied with a penalty, after one of their strong forward runs made a lot of ground and Kelly were forced into making a mistake. Massy-Birch immediately restored Kelly’s lead to seven points after an off side in the backs from Chumleigh. Kelly continued to press with some excellent flowing rugby, which was eventually rewarded with winger, Oliver Shea scoring in the corner, Massy-Birch again slotting the conversion. A good gap was opening up, and after an extraordinary try by Massy-Birch from the restart, where he ripped open the defence and ran 80 metres to score, at 22 -3 the game was going away from Chumleigh.
After the interval, Chumleigh were going down hill with a small breeze in their favour and played the conditions superbly. They kicked intelligently and scored twice with strong pick and drive tactics to bring the score back to 22 – 15 with ten minutes to play. The game was now in the balance and the great support on both sides in the impressive National Division 1 ground was beginning to echo, and raised the passion of both teams. Eventually Kelly’s superior ball skills paid off for the right wing, Ben Turner, to cross in the corner, to take a 29 – 15 lead with just minutes to go. Kelly ran the ball again from the kick off and, after a patient build-up and excellent phase play, Massy-Birch capped off a great team performance with a try which he duly converted. Chumleigh refused to give up but the Kelly defence stayed strong and, with the final whistle sending the Kelly supporters into raptures, they held out to win the U16 Devon Cup.

Comic Relief Swim Challenge - Friday 13th March 2009 |
The 2009 House Swim Challenge in Aid of Comic Relief took place on Friday 13th March at the Kelly pool and was a huge success. All those who took part both organising and participating in the day had an enjoyable time. We would like to thank all participants for taking part.
This event was a relay race where houses competed against each other dressed in house colours, in an attempt to earn as many points as possible. Points were awarded for lengths completed, money raised, puzzles completed and best dressed in each category. The winner will be the house that scores the most points.
All individuals were sponsored for the amount of lengths that each team completed, for example if the team completed 100 lengths then each team member would collect sponsorship for 100 lengths. All money raised will go to Comic Relief and the charities that they support.
Could we remind everyone that sponsorship money is to be handed to their Houseparent by Friday 24th April.
For further information please contact Rhys Davey or Josh Lake, U6.
